Series Review: The Boys (Amazon Prime)

The X-Men. Captain America. The Avengers.

For decades, people across the world have been captivated by the idea of superheroes.

Men and women graced by the gods, created in experiments gone terribly wrong, or simply born more than human take to the streets in an effort to make the world a better place.

Obviously, I’m a comic book nerd and avid fan of anything superhero. Back in the 90’s I would beg my parents to take me to the comic book store for the next issue of X-Men.

So that’s why when I saw a preview of The Boys on Amazon Prime, I nearly lost my mind.

A series … about superheroes … that looks expertly produced?

I couldn’t believe it. I had to see it immediately, if not sooner.

Before I tease you into annoyance, let’s get into the review of this action-packed rollercoaster ride!

The Boys

Blurb (IMDB)

The Boys is set in a universe where superpowered people are recognized as heroes by the general public and owned by powerful corporation Vought International, who ensures that they are properly marketed and monetized. Outside of their heroic personas, most are arrogant and corrupt.

The series primarily focuses on two groups: the titular Boys, vigilantes looking to keep the corrupted heroes under control, and the Seven, Vought International’s premier superhero team. The Boys are led by Billy Butcher, who despises all superpowered people, and the Seven are led by the egotistical and unstable Homelander.

As a conflict ensues between the two groups, the series also follows the new members of each team: Hugh “Hughie” Campbell of the Boys, who joins the vigilantes after his girlfriend is killed in a high speed collision by the Seven’s A-Train, and Annie January / Starlight of the Seven, a young and hopeful heroine forced to face the truth about the heroes she admires.

Review

Like a true superhero fan, I absolutely LOVED this show!

To start, the concept felt like liquid gold to me. We are immediately thrust into a world that has had superheroes for quite some time. Superheroes are deemed gods amongst men in the modern age, and a company by the name of Vought specifically selects and grooms potential heroes to protect cities across the US. I especially liked the social media spin on things versus today’s world and could easily relate to it.

Secondly, the characters. Oh goodness the characters!

I’m not going to introduce all of them to you here, but each character felt extremely well thought out and was relateable in their own way.

Hughie’s plight was quite heartbreaking, and I enjoyed watching him come to terms with his grief in a strange and unexpected way.

Each superhero also had their own personality and reason for being. I mean, these aren’t just superheroes, they’re people too, and we really got to see that in this first season. Everyone has demons that they must deal with, some more deadly than others.

Next, the grim reality of things. Like any alternate reality, nothing is perfect, and this world is deeply flawed underneath the surface. From the very beginning, I knew that things were not quite as they were being portrayed.

I had to know what the truth behind everything was, and that had me binging this show hardcore. I was able to control myself, but I still finished this series in about a week.

Last but certainly not least is all the amazing superhero action. I mean, wow! The action was well balanced along with the plot points and constantly had me staring at the screen in amazement. Sometimes it was brutal, other times simply impressive. Either way, I was hooked!

This show is hands down amazing and a must watch! Action, chills, and an irresistible plot make this one of my absolute favorites in 2019, maybe even the best!

Can’t wait for season two!

What about you?

  1. Great review! One of my coworkers was just telling me about this show. The way both him and your review described it really makes me want to watch it! I love the MCU and some DC movies too (The Dark Knight trilogy and Wonder Woman mainly). Not to mention I am a huge fan of the CW’s Arrowverse! I can’t wait to watch it!

    • Thanks! I really did love it, much more than anything I’ve watched lately. So now I have to rewatch it a bunch of times before the next one comes out, haha!

Oh yeah, I’m very big on anything superhero.

      • Haha I know what you mean! That would be me with Rick and Morty.

Also, I watched the first 3 episodes this weekend and wow! It IS a great show! A tad more gory than I expected, but great nonetheless! Cannot wait to finish it!

      • Ooo Rick and Morty was great too. It’s so easy to watch multiple episodes and just veg.

Yeah, it is a tad bit gory, but at least it’s just here and there. Good luck finishing, and I hope you enjoy the rest of it!
