Hello again,

Man am I glad that the day’s nearly over! I’ve been super busy at work.

That’s why I was so happy to finish The Dysasters on my lunch break!

I checked this book out at my local library after seeing it and remembering that it was on my TBR and about superheroes (of sorts). I mean, who doesn’t love that?

So how did I like it? Let’s get right into it!

Blurb:

Foster Stewart knows she’s different. Her life has never been “normal.” Talking to plants and controlling cloud formations aren’t things most seventeen year olds are into. Tate “Nighthawk” Taylor is perfect. Star quarterback and all around dreamy boy next door he never thought about his “extra” abilities. What quarterback wouldn’t want night vision? That’s not weird, right? It’s cool!

But on the night of their first meeting a deadly tornado brings them together and awakens their true abilities – the power to control the element air. Unbeknown to Tate and Foster, they are the first in a group of teens that were genetically manipulated before birth to bond with the elements. Which truly sucks for Foster, as she has to face the fact that Dr. Rick Stewart, her beloved scientist father, betrayed her and now wants to use her and the others for his own nefarious world domination plot.

Foster and Tate must stop Dr. Stewart and his minions before he destroys their lives and the world.

The Review:

I gave this book three weather-changing stars.

This book’s concept was what really drew me in. Tate and Foster have always felt that they are different from other kids, and when they meet each other on their eighteenth birthdays, their lives are forever changed.

They have abilities, and when strange individuals start chasing them down, they have to think fast. Can Tate and Foster find safety? Who are these people after them? How can they have any semblance of a life with these crazy powers?

I wanted to love this book, really I did. But there were too many things that didn’t work for me that I couldn’t ignore. I did finish this book (obviously), but I pretty much had to force myself to.

To avoid being a negative Nancy, I’ll start with the pros!

The concept was great. Anything in the realm of superheroes or humans with abilities will immediately get my attention. You’ve got these kids whose lives are thrust into chaos AND they’ve got powers. Holy moly that’s going to be one hell of a rollercoaster ride. In theory, this book really had a lot going for it.

I liked the artwork that was included in the book. While I wasn’t oooing and awing over it, I did like the nice touch.

The writing was where I started to have problems. The form is nice, but there were way too many details clogging up every scene. I get that you want to give your readers a little bit more, but the constant descriptions of the way everyone is staring at each other or their hand and body movements gets to be too much very quickly.

I also felt like this book was trying a little too hard to be YA. There were a lot of millennial expressions used that were quite funny, young, and relatable, but they occur far too frequently, as if the book is waving its hands around madly saying “Hey, I’m for young adults!” Dude, we get it. Tone it down a bit.

The characters seem to fight left and right with each other. The number of times Foster got mad at Tate was, hmm… every five minutes it felt. I have no idea why Tate was relatively attracted to her. But it’s not just Foster. Nearly every character has to rant in pretty much every scene. I got tired of it pretty quickly and even skimmed over tiny sections to get back to the plot.

I also found it hard to believe that the characters chasing after Foster and Tate were any older than them based on how they interacted.

What these pros and cons leave me with is a book that I just couldn’t get into, no matter how much I wanted to.

The Dysasters is a great concept of a book with entertaining bits and pieces here and there, but it left this reader disappointed from the experience. I will not be continuing this series.
