Movie Review – Aladdin (Disney +)

Movie Blurb:

A kind-hearted street urchin and a power-hungry Grand Vizier vie for a magic lamp that has the power to make their deepest wishes come true.

My Review:

Characters

fourstars

Like the classic Disney film, our characters for the most part stay true to form and are exciting to watch. I had a little trouble with Will Smith being the genie, but it’s hard to top Robbin Williams.

Plot

The movie follows the original film pretty directly, allowing us to enjoy and relive the wonder, action, and heartfelt love story.

Overall, can’t complain. Though some scenes and events are handled a bit differently, the story still held together pretty firmly.

Overall Impression

I am WAY behind on my Disney movie remakes, so I decided to try this one out first.

Everyone knows the story of Aladdin. A genie, magic carpets, a love between the most unlikely of people. This film was full of nostalgia for me. Every time I went to Grandma’s house, we had to watch all the newest Disney movies (this was early 90’s, people), so this is a tale I’ve always loved.

Overall I really loved this remake of the original. While I don’t necessarily agree with the direction they went with the genie, I think Disney did the best they could and I really don’t have any other complaints on the characters.

The plot is one that we know well, especially if you’ve seen the original as many times as I have, and it was executed very well despite some differences that might seem jarring to you. In the end, this is a great remake for Disney, and I’m excited to move on with others soon!

Final Score

8/10

  1. I loved this one. I think they fleshed out the story well, which was a little thin in the cartoon when you look back on it. I agree with your points. I think they were wise to make genie different because you can’t replace Robin, and Will did a great job. I was sorry that Raja and Iago were in it so little. Two major disappointments for me were that A Whole New World no longer makes sense, as Jasmine is always running around doing what she wants (I understand why they changed it though), and Jafar just didn’t have the Vincent Price kind of villainy that I was hoping for. Again, I understand the change and the actor did a good job, but still. My favorite of the love action remakes so far.

    • I agree with everything you’re saying here. Some things are quite a bit better, while others don’t completely add up. Still, it was a very solid performance overall and a lot of fun!
