Short Story Review: Death at 423 Stockholm Street

Hello World!

How’s the week been treating ya? Good I hope. It’s election day, so I hope you get out there and vote if you haven’t already.

As I advised in a previous post, I’m currently reading an ARC for a friend and that is kind of slowing down my intended reading plans for November. But the other day the great Thea McAlistair recommended a slew of free creepy short stories.

I’ve been feeling the need for a palette cleanse bookwise, so I went a reading. This time I read Death at 423 Stockholm Street by C.K. Walker.

You can read this story for free here if you’re so inclined.

Due to a blurb not being available, I dove right in and gave this one a shot. What did I think? Scroll on below to find out!

The Review

I gave this short story three and a half stars.

In a nutshell, this story is about a young girl named Lindsey who experiences terrifying sounds and scrapes against the wall of her bedroom at night. Over the years she wonders if the presence is a demon or just a nightmare until one night things take a sudden dark turn.

Overall, I was pleased with this short story.

The concept worked very well for me. Creepy scratchings on your bedroom wall? Holy moly, talk about scary! The main character’s reactions to the creepy happenings at night made total sense to me.

I do wish that we would’ve got to know the main character a bit better. The story takes place over a number of years, and by the end I felt like I still didn’t know her very well. I also wondered why the MC’s mom never really got involved the entire time.

The plot was super simple and entertaining, but I did find myself wanting a bit more substance out of the story. That being said, I have to say that the ending was quite a surprise to me, and I really enjoyed the twist.

Overall, while this wasn’t a perfect story, it was a nice break from my current read and worth a shot if you have thirty minutes or so to spare.

That’s A Wrap!

Well that’s it for this short story review. I hope you enjoyed it!

Have you read this story? Are there other short stories you’ve read that you simply have to gush about? Feel free to leave a comment. I’d love to start a conversation!

Have a great day!

  1. Good review! Over the past few days I re-read some stories in Arterial Bloom, an anthology edited by Mercedes Yardley. There are quality stories in the book, so I was trying to learn from them . . . when and how to introduce the monster, stuff like that.
