Movie Review – The Witches (2020) (HBO Max)

Ever since HBO upgraded all of their customers to have free access to HBOMax, I’ve been excited to watch new content, even more so when their normal app converted. The Witches is the first movie I watched on this new rollout and is a remake of the 1990 film that I’ve always enjoyed.
Overall I thought this remake was fairly solid and followed the same plot. Kids discover witches and plot to stop their evil plans to turn other kids into mice.
I enjoyed the familiar characters and their struggles. I would definitely not ever want to be a mouse! A cat? Maybe. Anne Hathaway’s performance was fine, although I wasn’t sure of her accent and wished they would’ve made her a bit uglier like with Anjelica Houston in the original. I loved Octavia Spencer’s role (I’m a huge fan) and think she definitely made the movie better.
The main plot was the same and followed some mousy hijinks, which was light and entertaining. I don’t necessarily agree with the ending that they came up with, but I’m not a fan of spoilers so I’ll zip my lips on that. I guess you’ll just have to watch it for yourself, huh?
By the end of the movie, I wasn’t floored or frustrated. This movie was alright, plain and simple. Could it have been better? Yes, but it still managed to capture my attention and it is worth a watch if you’re a fan of the original.

It sounds fun and light-hearted (as far as evil spells and mice can be light-hearted), even if it’s not a home-run kind of movie.
Yeah, I wasn’t too terribly disappointed in this one. I’ve definitely got to rewatch the original and compare. It’s been ages!
I’ve been on the fence about this one but I think I’ll pass–I did enjoy the original version! (not much can beat Angelica Huston)
Totally understandable. I think its average rating is fairly low. Save that time for something you feel more propelled to watch.
I have just watched The Witches 2020 (3 years too late !) and loved it. I thought it was fast paced, brilliant special effects (the mice were great !)
The Acting was fine, I am a fan of Octavia Spencer.
Ann Hathaway’s character was extremely scary. I would think this movie too scary for young children – it kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved the scene where the Witches were turning into rats ! It was lively, exhilarating and scary ! So much fun !
Yay! Glad you liked it. Octavia is one of my favorite actresses and she did a great job. Man, that scene where the witches revealed their true appearance was freaky!
