I can’t really complain myself. Classes start up today, so I made a last-minute dash to get some reading done before my schedule is filled with reading and assignments for grad school.
Picking something I thought I would blaze through, I read Something is Killing the Children, Vol. 1 by BOOM! Studios.
I’ve had this on my library’s ‘for later’ shelf for quite some time, so I thought I would give this a go. I don’t read too many graphic novels, so sticking to something more horror-based seemed a good idea.

Phenomenal!
I absolutely loved this graphic novel and am so glad I gave this a chance.
In a nutshell, children are going missing at an alarming rate around Archer’s Peak, Wisconsin. James is a survivor of a terrible attack that killed his friends, but when his path coincides with a mysterious woman Erica Slaughter, he joins her on her quest to destroy whatever evil monster is killing the children.
Everything about this book worked for me, hands down.
The characters were wonderful for a start. James’s POV was heartbreaking. His friends were all murdered, and he’s going through such a tidal wave of emotions. I really liked his progression, even though he has a ways to go. Underneath it all, he’s got courage, and his more heroic traits do shine through when we get to see them.
Erica is such a kick-butt character and easily my favorite. She’s mysterious, no-nonsense, and works for this strange company/organization that seems to know much more about these monsters than anyone else does. I’m dying to know more, as well as getting to know her own personal story through this journey.
The plot was riveting throughout. Each scene kept my attention, and there was so much mystery shrouding what was going on that I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Also, I loved all the great gory scenes. It was violent, fantastic, and didn’t hold back. Definitely not a read for younger audiences, especially squeamish ones.
If you love horror, give this a chance. You won’t be sorry!
