Blurb:

Early retirees Maria and Richard Wilcox adore their new home out in the country. The past six months have been sheer bliss as they settled in and prepared for their golden years.

Until the night they answer a knock on their door.

The unexpected visitors are a pair of children. Richard tries to be cordial, but something about the kids is off. Something sinister, something menacing, something inhuman.

And then the children demand to be let in.

What do they want? Is this all a prank? Can Maria and Richard get them to go away, or will their dreams of a peaceful retirement together go up in flames?

Excerpt:

Richard and Maria’s eyes met, and they leaned in for a kiss before relaxing once more. Minutes passed, and Richard fell into a trance as the record player churned out soft, relaxing melodies he knew by heart.

Just when his eyelids were beginning to droop, a sudden gasp from Maria snapped him back to attention. Richard jolted upright as Maria’s glass slipped from her hands and hit the carpet with a dull thud. Her face had paled several shades, and she had a fist clenched over her chest as she gaped forward.

“What’s wrong? Are you okay?”

“I-I … I thought I saw … the window.”

Richard looked to the open window. “Sweetheart, there’s nothing there. Are you sure you didn’t just imagine it?”

“I could’ve sworn … Sorry, I must have gotten too much sun today.”

Maria glanced down at the floor, and Richard followed her gaze. Her glass’s contents had spilled onto the beige carpet in a large crimson blotch.

“It’s alright.” Richard stooped over to pick up the glass, feeling a twinge in his back when he stood up. “You relax. I’ll get something to clean this–”

Knock, knock, knock. Richard jumped and Maria yelped in fright.

“We’re worse than a couple cats in a room full of rocking chairs,” Richard said with a chuckle, hoping to lighten the mood. “Did either of the boys call to say they were stopping by?”

“No,” Maria said with a tremor in her voice.

The knocking continued, heavy and steady.

Knock, knock, knock. Knock, knock, knock.

That’s a Wrap!

Thanks for stopping by!
