Book Review: Hatch (The Overthrow #2)

Brrr readers, it’s cold out there! 🥶🥶🥶

Well, at least for me in Kansas City. We finally had some snow and I got a snow day, but work still has me massively stressed out so like I always do, I depend on reading for sanity. And wouldn’t you know it, I finished another book!

This time I read Hatch (The Overthrow #2) by Kenneth Oppel.

So if you’ve been following my reviews then you may be a tad puzzled by how long it took me to get to this read. Basically I overextended myself and had three series going at once. Turns out that wasn’t a great move for me. But I’m back to this series and that’s what counts, right?

I really loved the first book (review link below), so I just had to know what happened in the next one. Alright, on to the review!

Book Review: Bloom (The Overthrow #1)

Blurb

Book Two in the Bestselling Bloom Trilogy

First the rain brought seeds. Seeds that grew into alien plants that burrowed and strangled and fed.

Seth, Anaya, and Petra are strangely immune to the plants’ toxins and found a way to combat them. But just as they have their first success, the rain begins again. This rain brings eggs. That hatch into insects. Not small insects. Bird-sized mosquitos that carry disease. Borer worms that can eat through the foundation of a house. Boat-sized water striders that carry away their prey.

But our heroes aren’t able to help this time–they’ve been locked away in a government lab with other kids who are also immune. What is their secret? Could they be…part alien themselves? Whose side are they on?

Kenneth Oppel expertly escalates the threats and ratchets up the tension in this can’t-read-it-fast-enough adventure with an alien twist. Readers will be gasping for the next book as soon as they turn the last page…

The Review

Man, what a fun sequel!

After Seth, Anaya, and Petra do their part to even the tide against the invading plants from space, they soon meet a new threat only to be whisked away in isolation. The three teens find themselves with others just like them, and as they struggle to put the pieces of this situation together they grapple with the changes in their bodies that are anything but normal. What are they turning into, and can they break from their captivity to turn the tide for Earth once again?

This was such a roller coaster ride!

I really enjoyed how the author made this a dark MG/YA book. It goes in places most don’t go unapologetically, and I think that’s something worth mentioning and applauding.

We get a ton of worldbuilding in this one. There are a lot of great developments, twists, and turns that kept me excited every chapter, and I couldn’t get enough. Like the first there was plenty of horror without getting too terribly scary, but expect some monsters you’ve never seen before!

Our characters developed a lot in this novel. They continue to change physically, and both that and the terrible situation they find themselves in affects them emotionally. I will say that Petra kind of came off as a petulant child in spots and I found her personality to be a bit too bitter, but she’s also been my least favorite of the three.

All in all, this was a stellar sequel, and I can’t wait to finish the trilogy!

That’s A Wrap!

Well that’s it for this book review. I hope you enjoyed it!
