Book Review: Heartsong (Green Creek #3)

Howdy Book Nerds!

How’s life treating you? Good I hope! I’ve been dealing with some stress with my car and work lately, but with my upcoming book release, it almost evens out. Naturally, I hit the books for some mental therapy.

This time I read Heartsong (Green Creek #3) by TJ Klune.

My book buddy Misty and I have been waiting to start this, and I’m definitely placing the long wait on my library. There were just a couple people in front of me for the ebook and it took nearly two months for me to get my hands on it. By the time I got my hands on it I pounced on it.

Let’s see how this one went!

Life as the trusted second to Michelle Hughes―the Alpha of all―and the cherished friend of a gentle old witch teaches Robbie what it means to be pack, to have a home. But when a mission from Michelle sends Robbie into the field, he finds himself questioning where he belongs and everything he’s been told.

Whispers of traitorous wolves and wild magic abound―but who are the traitors and who the betrayed? More than anything, Robbie hungers for answers, because one of those alleged traitors is Kelly Bennett―the wolf who may be his mate.

The truth has a way of coming out. And when it does, everything will shatter.

The Review

Oh man, what happened with this book? I had such high hopes after the first two great ones, but this one was a letdown.

This time around we are following Robbie’s POV, which I’ll admit didn’t seem very exciting from the start. He’s just never been my favorite character, and he still isn’t. He just doesn’t have the allure or charisma that other characters do.

Something has happened to Robbie’s memory, and as he struggles to remember anything from his life before he must choose between the Bennetts and Michelle Hughes’ pack. I’m gonna be honest, I didn’t like how the book started out with this. At first, it was hard to tell if the book was set in the past, present, or future from the ending of book two, and that made everything confusing. It had this psychological element going on that I didn’t care for all that much, but things do eventually get clarified.

Pacing was also an issue for me. The first quarter or so was establishing Robbie’s current predicament, and then the next half of the book had a lot of drama. I mean a lot! Robbie doesn’t know who to trust, so there’s a lot of emotions flying around, and while that’s great, the nonstop drama really started to grate on my nerves after a while. Almost every single character had to have multiple heart to hearts with Robbie (which again, is fine), but it screwed up the balance that we’ve come to expect. There was very little werewolf fights or action in the first three quarters of the book, and I ended up skimming some parts because I was getting fed up with all the constant touchy feely stuff.

I will say, things finally come to a point in the last quarter, and I really enjoyed when things hit the fan. There are some stunning developments, and the action didn’t let up, but it was too little too late for me.

I am going to finish out this series, but I was really disappointed by how this one differed from the others so far. If you prefer the romance and personal storylines to action, then I think you won’t have a problem with this one.
