Book Review: Wolfsong (Green Creek #1)

Hello Bookworms!

I hope you’re all doing well. I’m running around like crazy with grad school, work, and everything in between so I’ll keep this intro as brief as I can.

This is my last read before I begin reading a collection of YA reads and watches (movies and TV shows) for grad school, so my reviews will be a little more in depth after this one. Once I’m done with those, I’ll return things to the way they were. As much as I enjoy writing on an academic level, I prefer my reviews to be more personal in nature and casual.

This time around I read Wolfsong (Green Creek #1) by TJ Klune

My book buddy Misty, myself, and a friend of hers have been wanting to buddy read this for a while, and I couldn’t resist another Klune read. I loved House in the Cerulean Sea, and this seemed relatively similar, so I dove right in. On to the review!

PS: I got my copy before Misty or her friend, so this will be my individual opinion, to be followed by a buddy read conversation that will be delayed.

Blurb

Ox was twelve when his daddy taught him a very valuable lesson. He said that Ox wasn’t worth anything and people would never understand him. Then he left.

Ox was sixteen when he met the boy on the road. The little boy who talked and talked and talked. Ox found out later the little boy hadn’t spoken in almost two years before that day, and that the little boy belonged to a family who had moved into the house at the end of the lane.

Ox was seventeen when he found out the little boy’s secret and it painted the world around him in colors of red and orange and violet, of Alpha and Beta and Omega.

Ox was twenty-three when murder came to town and tore a hole in his head and heart. The boy chased after the monster with revenge in his bloodred eyes, leaving Ox behind to pick up the pieces.

It’s been three years since that fateful day—and the boy is back. Except now he’s a man, and Ox can no longer ignore the song that howls between them.

The Review

I love paranormal creatures, and this unique spin on werewolves by TJ Klune was full of drama, romance, and plenty of action.

Oxnard Matheson lives in the small town of Green Creek. In his youth, his father leaves him and his mother to fend for themselves. Ox tries his best to be a man and take care of things, but everything changes when the new neighbors move in and a strange excited boy latches on to him. Ox is so grateful to have finally found a friend, but there’s so much more to this boy and his family than meets the eye that will change not only Ox’s life, but that of the citizens of Green Creek.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect with this story, but I was hooked from the first page.

Oxnard is a great protagonist. Though he may not be the brightest guy, he learns how to think for himself, build courage, and rise against obstacles he never could’ve dreamed he would face. He had a lot of character development, and that’s a common theme with a lot of characters like Joe, Gordo, and Jessie too.

Found family is a strong element to this story, and the werewolf element makes it even stronger with a pack mentality. I also liked the romance element. It was strong, but it didn’t overpower the plot. There were plenty of battles along the way, both inner and outer, and I couldn’t wait to find out what happened in the next chapter. There were tears and laughs, anger and frustration, but it was all wrapped up perfectly in this novel.

I did knock some points off due to some of the extensive dialogue scenes that seemed to go on a little bit too long for my liking, and some of the dialogue could get confusing as to who was saying what, but other than that I have no complaints.

If you’re looking for a heartfelt coming of age story with a strong paranormal element, then this is the perfect read for you!

That’s A Wrap!

Well that’s it for this book review. I hope you enjoyed it!

  1. I’m so glad you ended up enjoying this one. And I’m sorry our discussion is going to be delayed. I had the hardest freaking time getting a copy of the book for some reason. I guess everyone wants to read it.
