Graphic Novel Review: Garlic and the Vampire (Garlic #1)

Why hello there, readers!
It’s time for another book review!
Today I’m reviewing the graphic novel Garlic and the Vampire (Garlic #1) by Bree Paulsen.
After reading the blurb and seeing the adorable cover art, I couldn’t resist picking this one up. Let’s see how it went!
Blurb
A farm-fresh debut graphic novel starring a heroine who is braver than she realizes.
Garlic feels as though she’s always doing something wrong. At least with her friend Carrot by her side and the kindly Witch Agnes encouraging her, Garlic is happy to just tend her garden, where it’s nice and safe.
But when her village of vegetable folk learns that a bloodthirsty vampire has moved into the nearby castle, they all agree that, in spite of her fear and self-doubt, Garlic is the obvious choice to confront him. And with everyone counting on her, Garlic reluctantly agrees to face the mysterious vampire, hoping she has what it takes.
After all, garlic drives away vampires…right?

The Review

Oh gosh, this was a fantastic fantasy adventure!
In this graphic novel, we follow young Garlic. She’s just one of many magical fruits and veggies that Witch Agnes has conjured to help her with gardening. Garlic feels guilty for constantly being late to sell goods to the local townsfolk, but that’s nothing compared to the panic she feels when they discover that a vampire has taken residence in a nearby castle. Terrified but brave, Garlic embarks on a journey to confront the vampire and find out whether he means her family harm or not.
I loved this graphic novel to pieces! What stood out to me most was the artwork. It’s expertly rendered, colorful, and so cute! I loved all the goofy faces that the fruits, vegetables, and human characters made. I couldn’t put this one down because every page was a masterful work of art.
I loved Garlic as a character. She’s an unlikely hero, as she’s nervous and lacks self confidence. In her brief journey she learns how to overcome her fears and be brave, and I think that’s a great message for younger readers. All the other fruits and vegetables had distinct personalities, especially frenemy Celery.
The plot of this graphic novel was cozy and fast-paced. There was some light mystery and magic throughout, and I honestly have no complaints. This is a perfect read for any young reader or if you’re a fruits and veggie lover. Highly recommend!
That’s A Wrap!
Well that’s it for this graphic novel review. I hope you enjoyed it!
