Graphic Novel Review: Green Lantern: Legacy

Hello Bookish Heroes and Vigilantes,
Are you ready for another superhero book review? I sure am! That’s why I’m so excited for today’s review of Green Lantern: Legacy by Minh Lê.
You know, I’m typically more of a Marvel kinda guy, but in recent years I’ve learned to appreciate some DC graphic novels so I thought I’d give this one a go. On to the book review!
Blurb
The owner of the Jade Market has a secret–one that will soon change her grandson’s life.
Thirteen-year-old Tai Pham lives in the apartment above his grandmother’s store, where his bedroom is crammed with sketchpads and comic books. But not even his most imaginative drawings could compare to the colorful adventure he’s about to embark on.
When Tai inherits his grandmother’s jade ring, he soon finds out it’s more than it appears. Suddenly he’s being inducted into a group of space cops known as the Green Lanterns, his neighborhood is being overrun by some racist bullies, and every time he puts pen to paper, he’s forced to confront that he might not be creative enough or strong enough to uphold his ba’s legacy.
Now Tai must decide what kind of hero he wants to be: will he learn to soar above his insecurities or will the past keep him grounded?

The Review

I’ve got a newfound respect for Green Lantern after reading this awesome graphic novel!
Young Tai lives with his family, helping his grandma run The Jade Market, a beacon of hope in his community. However, when his grandma dies and he inherits a bizarre jade ring that gives him superpowers, Tai has to learn what he stands for and what it means to be a hero.
I loved the masterful art of this book. Each page was colorful and imaginative, and that kept me blazing through the pages quickly.
Tai is a great main character. He’s been raised by his caring grandmother and parents that stand for peace and compassion, and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Tai has to decide between the morals he’s been raised with against those of a sinister force built on fear, and that journey felt perfect for a young tween. I also really enjoyed his best friends Tommy and Serena, who stuck by him through thick and thin.
This story moved fast and had interesting developments at every turn, so if you enjoy a quick read or need an introduction to superheroes for your kiddo you can’t go wrong with this one. Highly recommend!
That’s A Wrap!
Well that’s it for this graphic novel review. I hope you enjoyed it!
Have you read this graphic novel? Are there similar ones you’ve read that you simply have to gush about? Feel free to leave a comment. I’d love to start a conversation!
