Book Review: Devil’s Wake (Devil’s Wake #1)

Howdy Readers,
Is it just me, or is February moving along too fast? Ugh, I need more time for reading!
Today I’m sharing my thoughts on Devil’s Wake (Devil’s Wake #1) by Steven Barnes and Tananarive Due.
So way back in the day I read and loved the free short story by Due called Patient Zero, but since then I’ve been completed buried by my TBR and haven’t been able to read more of her works. I’m happy to say that ends now!
When I saw that there was a zombie/apocalyptic book co-written by her, I just had to give it a go. On with the book review!
Blurb
An exciting paranormal novel from two award-winning authors about what happens when an alien race brings Earth to the brink of the Apocalypse.
What happens when an unprecedented infection sweeps the world, leaving the earth on the brink of the Apocalypse?
But this infection goes far beyond disease. Beyond even the nightmare images of walking dead or flesh-eating ghouls. The infected are turning into creatures unlike anything ever dreamed of . . . more complex, more mysterious, and more deadly.
Trapped in the northwestern United States as winter begins to fall, Terry and Kendra have only one they and their friends must cross a thousand miles of no-man’s-land in a rickety school bus, battling ravenous hordes, human raiders, and their own fears.
In the midst of apocalypse, they find something no one could have anticipated . . . love.

The Review

I was pretty impressed with this YA zombie novel.
Spurred on by a deadly combination of a flu shot and an exotic mushroom fad, the world is thrust into a hellish nightmare. Those who are infected bite others, and the contagion spreads rapidly, destroying any semblance of a normal life. After losing her parents, Kendra does her best to stay alive when she meets a group of fellow teens that take a chance on her. Together, they brave the dangerous new world seeking hope and safety.
I love me a good zombie novel, and this one was solid.
The characters really made it shine for me. Kendra is a smart young black woman, perhaps a little too scared of the world at first, but she showed a lot of growth. Slowly she learns to trust others and open herself up emotionally. I really enjoyed the funny banter between the group of other teens. It helped lightened the mood in spots, and they each had a distinct personality that shone through.
The writing was really easy to get into and stick with. It was really hard to put this one down!
There’s a lot of action and developments in each chapter with very high stakes. I learned some important tidbits about the ‘freaks’, but they didn’t give everything away, so there’s a lot more potential here to be explored.
If you love to read YA and zombie novels, I think you’ll really enjoy this one!
That’s A Wrap!
Well that’s it for this book review. I hope you enjoyed it!
