Book Review: Extra Normal

Happy Spooky Season, Readers!
Man, can you believe Halloween is almost here already? I am sooo not ready!
My last few reads on here were fairly adult in nature, so I wanted to dive back into an MG book with Extra Normal by Kate Alice Marshall.
I actually bought an ebook of this last year and totally forgot to read it! When I saw my copy when perusing my Kindle I kicked myself for not noticing it earlier. Let’s see what this spooky read was like!
Blurb
It’s hard to fight the supernatural when you’re naturally “un-super.” This chilling middle grade is perfect for fans of Stranger Things and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark…even if they don’t have any special powers.
Charlie Greer is nothing special—at least not compared to her adopted siblings. Her younger sister is a ghost. Her brother Mateo is a werewolf. Gideon is the product of seriously sketchy experiments that gave him telekinetic powers. Even her parents work for the Division of Extranormal Investigations tracking down all things supernatural, alien, and otherwise unusual.
Charlie’s mom says her superpower is maturity—which doesn’t really count. But what Charlie lacks in powers she makes up for by keeping the household running. Now, with her parents off on their first vacation in years, it’s up to her to take care of her siblings and make sure nothing disrupts the trip.
But then the new neighbors arrive. The Weavers are a nice, normal couple. Too nice and too normal. And for some reason, they don’t seem to want Charlie to see inside their house. She’s certain they’re hiding something. Charlie has to uncover what’s going on with the Weavers and stop their plans—without letting Mom and Dad find out anything is wrong.

The Review

This was such a fun read!
Charlie is one of the only normal members in her family. With her telekinetic and werewolf brothers, ghostly sister, and clairvoyant mother, she can’t help but feel unspecial. Her parents work for an agency to protect paranormal beings, but they’re overdo for a vacation so Charlie steps up to take care of her siblings in the meantime. However, when a strange family moves in across the street, the whole neighborhood is in danger. Can Charlie and her siblings stop them before it’s too late?
What really set this book apart was the characters. They felt so real! Charlie is your average almost teen that just wants to find her place in the world, and I loved her progression throughout the novel. Gideon and Matty were quirky and adorable, and I loved how unique and complex ghostly Opal was.
All the interactions with the siblings felt real, and even the minor characters stood out with their personalities. That really made me care for the characters that much more.
The writing was easy to read and the plot moved at a quick pace with thrilling spooky developments everywhere I turned. This had all the Halloween vibes and then some while being appropriate for younger readers, so if you’re looking for a fun paranormal book for you or your kiddo, you can’t pass this one up!
I can’t wait to read more books by this author!
That’s A Wrap!
