Book Review: My Mother’s Spirit

Howdy dowdy readers!

Man, it is cold over here in Kansas City! I hope you’re all bundling up against these frigid temperatures. The boyfriend and I had a little fright with our furnace the day before our first snow hit, but luckily we were able to get it all fixed up so we’re nice and warm.

You know what else these cold temps are great for? Reading books!

Today I’m sharing my review of My Mother’s Spirit by Vanessa Kramer.

Vanessa is another local Kansas City author and we’ve become really good friends after doing a large number of events together. I even got a chance to interview her earlier this year (you can check that out here).

I was really excited about diving into this read, so let’s see how it went!

What secrets are buried in the forest?

Abby’s parents have coerced her and her twin sister to spend the summer in England with odd relatives she’s never met. As she grapples with her estranged family, a chance encounter ignites the spark of a potential romance.

But it’s in the depths of the woods where Abby finds an unexpected guide- a mysterious girl who reveals the intricate threads entwining the past, present, and future. In a journey of self-discovery and unexpected magic, Abby must navigate love, family secrets, and the haunting echoes of a tragedy that longs to be discovered.

The Review

Wow, this was such a fun read!

Abby and her sister Jo just landed in rural England with their parents for the summer. Staying with their grandparents in their rustic home is dull, but Abby soon finds herself infatuated with a local young man named Callum. The reverie of Abby’s new crush is interrupted when strange seemingly paranormal events begin to occur. Who is the strange woman that keeps appearing to her, and what does she want from her?

I really enjoyed the mix of paranormal and mystery with this book. England is foreign to Abby, so that made the mystery even more difficult to navigate for her and upped the stakes.

Kramer’s writing style is unique, engaging, and easy to read. Once I got into the story it was hard for me to put it down.

The characters really made this story pop. Abby starts off as an average teen, but I like how complex her background became from chapter to chapter. Her desires were easy to relate to, and that made her a great main character. Jo was a good sister, and extra kudos for the LGBT representation! I also resonated with Rachel and Abby’s grandparents.

The plot was a ton of fun! Lots of mystery, paranormal happenings, and teen shenanigans are in each chapter, with a dark undertone to the story. If you’re looking for a quality read with some chills and thrills, give this one a go!
