Book Review: Beware, the Snowman (Goosebumps #51)

Brrr, readers!

It is getting cold over here in Kansas City, how about you? The switch to the colder weather seemed to happen overnight, so I’ve constantly got a blanket handy. Boo!

With the cold season upon us, I wanted to read something a little seasonal, so today I’m sharing my thoughts on Beware, the Snowman (Goosebumps #51) by R.L. Stine.

The cover seemed really familiar, but for the life of me I couldn’t recall if I’d read this as a kid or not, so let’s just jump right into the review!

NO MELTING ALLOWED!

Jaclyn used to live with her aunt Greta in Chicago. But not anymore. They’ve moved to a place called Sherpia. It’s a tiny village on the edge of the Arctic Circle.

Jaclyn can’t believe she’s stuck out in Nowheresville. No movie theaters. No malls. No nothing. Plus, there’s something really odd about the village.

At night there are strange howling noises. And in front of every house there’s a snowman. A creepy snowman with a red scarf. A deep scar on his face. And a really evil smile. . . .

The Review

Wow, I was not expecting to like this read as much as I did!

Jaclyn just moved to this strange little village near the arctic circle with her aunt Greta, and she is not having a good time. It’s always snowing, there’s very few kids to hang out with, and little to do. But it gets even worse when she starts hearing howls in the night. As she questions the kids she knows in the village, they tell her a crazy story about a terrifying snowman at the top of a nearby mountain. But it can’t be true, can it?

What really made this shine more than other Goosebumps books was Jaclyn. She wasn’t your average scaredy cat. She was stubborn and had a really good head on her shoulders. Most of the decisions she made were pretty rational, and even when there were little slip ups, it was relatively understandable. Given how late in the Goosebumps series this was, I think perhaps Stine had learned some lessons about portraying kids in a more real way. Either way, she was believable.

Her aunt was mysterious, and I liked the local kids that she talked with. They helped maintain the ominous tone.

I’ve always really enjoyed the colder months of the year, so the setting was great.

I also loved the plot and how it kept me on my toes. Each chapter had some kind of development that deepened the element of mystery, and I liked the fantasy elements that came into play too. There were certain twists and turns that I didn’t see coming, and that really surprised me, so this one ranks highly in my favorite re-reads of Goosebumps so far.

If you’re feeling nostalgic and want one of the more solid Goosebumps books, definitely give this a read!
