Book Review: UnWholly (Unwind #2)

Happy Holidays, Readers!

It’s a new year, and I hope you have a great start to whatever goals you’ve set for yourself. Let’s make some great strides this year! You know what I love about all the time off around the holidays? All the extra time to read!

With my time off I’ve been reading very consistently, and today I’m sharing my thoughts on UnWholly (Unwind #2) by Neal Shusterman.

I loved the first novel and the novella after that, so it’s probably no surprise that I’m continuing to read this series. If you’re a bit behind on my blog, you can catch up with my other reviews below, but let’s get into this book review!

Blurb

It’s finally here. The long-awaited sequel to the bestselling Unwind, which Publishers Weekly called a “gripping, brilliantly imagined futuristic thriller.”

Thanks to Connor, Lev, and Risa—and their high-profile revolt at Happy Jack Harvest Camp—people can no longer turn a blind eye to unwinding. Ridding society of troublesome teens while simltaneously providing much-needed tissues for transplant might be convenient, but its morality has finally been brought into question. However, unwinding has become big business, and there are powerful political and corporate interests that want to see it not only continue, but also expand to the unwinding of prisoners and the impoverished.

Cam is a product of unwinding; made entirely out of the parts of other unwinds, he is a teen who does not technically exist. A futuristic Frankenstein, Cam struggles with a search for identity and meaning and wonders if a rewound being can have a soul. And when the actions of a sadistic bounty hunter cause Cam’s fate to become inextricably bound with the fates of Connor, Risa, and Lev, he’ll have to question humanity itself.

Rife with action and suspense, this riveting companion to the perennially popular Unwind challenges assumptions about where life begins and ends—and what it means to live.

The Review

This series keeps getting better!

After what happened at Happy Jack, Connor, Risa, and Lev have moved on with their lives. Lev lives with his brother, and Connor and Risa have returned to the Graveyard where they help other teens avoid Unwinding. But peace doesn’t last long, and all three of them will have to dig deep if they want to survive the series of unfortunate events that threaten their lives.

I think what I like most about this series is that it keeps me on my feet. Typically with a book I have a general idea of where it’s going, but Shusterman surprised me at every turn. That kept things interesting and helped me blaze through this read.

Like last time, I truly love the cast of characters. Connor struggles with the heavy responsibility he’s been given, Risa finds herself in a terrible blackmail situation, and Lev must find a new direction after he suffers from devastating losses. Each character is brave and admirable in their own ways, and I love that Shusterman made them so capable. Teens are smarter than many give them credit for. The new characters introduced made this even more well rounded of a story with so many unique perspectives.

As with the last book, there is action, suspense, and developments at every turn, which make this book hard to put down. It pulls at the heart strings with its resilient voice for humanity, making for an unforgettable experience. Highly recommend!
