Book Review: Unwind (Unwind #1)

Happy Holidays, Readers!

Christmas is so darn close I can almost taste it, so I hope you’re excited about whatever festivities you’ve got going on too! Lately I’ve been doing well on catching up on my TBR, so I wanted to pick something physical on my shelves that I haven’t tried yet to clear up some space.

Looking over my eclectic options, I went with Unwind (Unwind #1) by Neal Shusterman.

I’ve been a huge fan of Shusterman ever since I read his Scythe series (my reviews here if you’re curious), so it was a no brainer for me to try this series, especially since a lot of my friends have been suggesting it to me.

I have high hopes for this series, so let’s see how things went!

Blurb

Connor, Risa, and Lev are running for their lives.

The Second Civil War was fought over reproductive rights. The chilling resolution: Life is inviolable from the moment of conception until age thirteen. Between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, however, parents can have their child “unwound,” whereby all of the child’s organs are transplanted into different donors, so life doesn’t technically end. Connor is too difficult for his parents to control. Risa, a ward of the state, is not enough to be kept alive. And Lev is a tithe, a child conceived and raised to be unwound. Together, they may have a chance to escape and to survive.

The Review

Shusterman hits another home run with this YA dystopian start to the Unwind series!

In a dystopian world where teens between 13 and 18 can be divided and their body parts redistributed to those in need (a procedure called Unwinding), Connor, Risa, and Lev are on the run. They want to be able to live a free life, but they find that safety is hard to come by. They may not just have to change minds to find that peace, but change the cruel world itself.

I love a good dystopian novel, and the ideas in this novel are so fresh and heart wrenching. Each chapter moved at a fast pace and had my complete attention. It was so hard to put this one down!

Connor, Risa, and Lev are great main characters, each with a unique backstory and personality that make the pages of this book come to life. Lev has been raised to be unwound, Risa has been raised as a ward of the state, and Connor’s parents order him to be unwound due to his volatile personality. I loved the interactions between these characters, and they had so much progression and felt like real people.

This story is told in third person present tense, which admittedly isn’t my favorite style, but it really worked for the story. This book gave me all the feels and then some, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
