I hope you’re enjoying late summer, but honestly I’m in preparation mode for Halloween at this point. I just can’t wait any longer!

A good spooky read always get me in the Halloween spirit, so my last read was The Undrowned by K.R. Alexander.

I have a whopping 11 of this author’s MG books, all of them found through thrifting. To date I’ve read 5 of the 11 books (loved each one!), so I’m trying to pace myself on this author’s work by reading one every few months or so.

Okay, let’s see if this one was another hit!

The Review

I adored this creepy MG book!

Samantha has been a school bully ever since her best friend Rachel betrayed her. Samantha has gotten used to the perks of intimidating her former friend into doing things for her, but an accident happens one day at a nearby lake. Rachel falls into the water and doesn’t return. Samantha is shocked when Rachel shows up at school the next day like nothing happened. Only there’s something wrong with her, terribly wrong.

Like the other books I’ve read by this author, I loved how the story drew me in from the first page. The writing is super easy to read and the pacing is fast. And boy is this book spooky! The way the paranormal scares happened were original and terrifying. Overall this book seemed a little darker than the others I’ve read, and I really enjoyed it.

Samantha is hard to root for given how she treats others, but underneath it all she has a good heart and I really like her character progression throughout. There weren’t any sidekicks for Samantha given her bully status, but I thought the duality with Rachel and Samantha’s little sister Jessica had great contributions to the story.

If you’re needing a spooky read to get into the approaching fall season, look no further. Highly recommend!
