Book Review: School’s Out For Never! (Terror Valley #1)

How’s it hanging, bibliophiles?
Spring is on it’s way, and I’m ready for some nicer weather, aren’t you? Besides writing the sequel to The Ruins, not much else is going on with me, but I always need to read to keep my creative batteries charged.
This time I chose to read School’s Out For Never! (Terror Valley #1) by Squall Charlson.
I met Squall late last year at a library event where other authors like myself were showing off our published works. When I saw his covers and he told me it was similar to Goosebumps, I had to have them!
I’m new to Squall’s writing so I just dove right into this new adventure. On to the review!
Blurb
Freddy and his classroom friends are stoked for the upcoming summer break. Endless hours at the pool, sleepovers every night, staying up late, and of course no homework.
That’s what he thought was in his future once 3 o’clock rolled around — but instead, his day starts over again.
And again.
And again.
No one believes Freddy, not even his friends! But the teachers seem meaner each day, the tests are getting harder and harder, and what’s worst of all — the cafeteria food is especially bad.
It’s only getting worse with each passing day.
And it’s being served on repeat for the rest of his life!

The Review

This book was so much fun!
Freddy is a fifth grader about to graduate from elementary school. He hasn’t been applying himself all year and is grateful to just be done with this chapter of his life. That is, until his last day at school repeats. As Freddy continues to experience the same day over and over, he’ll have to think outside the box if he ever wants to leave.
What really drew me in was the Groundhog’s Day setup. I enjoy a good mystery, and this one had me hooked! Each chapter was nice and short, and I kept wanting more so it was easy to blaze through. The writing was easy to understand and silly at times like Goosebumps, but not overly cringey to where I was rolling my eyes. At other times the story was grim, and I think this book was very well rounded.
It was easy to relate to Freddy. He’s unsure of himself, as most kids are his age, and he has some really great character progression. This ordeal helped him think for himself, utilize his noggin, and gave him some peace of mind for the present and future.
I also really loved how I wasn’t sure who the bad guy was until later on, which was a nice surprise.
If you like Goosebumps but want something more elevated and well thought out I think you’ll love this one!
That’s A Wrap!
Well that’s it for this book review. Like what you see? Leave a tip!
