Book Review: Sarah
Hello Paranormal Witnesses and Spook Investigators,
Today’s book review is perfect for this time of the year. I’ll be reviewing Sarah by Teri Polen, a horror/suspense novel of terrifying proportions!
Before we begin, a little bit of backstory. Teri Polen is a friend of mine on WordPress. I read one of her works and was hooked since then, so I was thrilled when I heard she had a horror book out!
If you’d like to know more about Teri, you can find my interview with her here.
Otherwise, let’s get this haunted house a rockin’!
Blurb:
Sarah was named a horror finalist in the 2017 Next Generation Indie Book Awards.
Seventeen-year-old horror fan Cain Shannon thought helping a ghost find her killers would be the supernatural adventure of a lifetime. Now, he just hopes to survive long enough to protect his family and friends from her.
A bet between friends goes horribly wrong, resulting in Sarah’s death. When she returns to seek justice against those responsible, Cain agrees to help her. But when he discovers Sarah has been hijacking his body, he realizes she wants retribution instead of justice.
Terrified of what could have happened when he wasn’t in control, Cain commands Sarah to leave his house – but exorcising her isn’t that easy. She retaliates against her murderers in bloody, horrific ways, each death making her stronger, then sets her sights on Cain. With the help of friends, Cain fights to save himself and his loved ones and searches for a way to stop Sarah before she kills again.
The Review:
Five vengeful stars for this book!
After reading The Gemini Connection by this author, I had to read more of her works, and fortunately for me, she had a horror novel perfect for reading around Halloween time.
I was recently disappointed by another read (not by this author) and was desperate for something good and entertaining. Boy was I glad I chose to read this book!
The novel Sarah is centered around a young man, Cain Shannon and his family. He loves his mom and sister Maddie and hanging out with his sarcastic bestie Finn. But soon, Cain’s life gets dangerously complicated.
The attic door connected to his bedroom begins to open on its own, and when Cain investigates, he stumbles upon the spectral form of a girl named Sarah. Sarah claims she was murdered by three boys in his house when it was under construction and that he has to help her.
Should Cain put his life on hold to help this spirit? How can he help her? And most of all, is she telling the truth, or does she have darker intentions?
This book had it all. Suspense, drama, laughs, and most of all, horror!
An urban tale, it was very easy to identify with Cain and his issues from the beginning, as I remember feeling the same way in high school (it hasn’t been THAT long, people!). I also really enjoyed the secondary characters as well. His best friend Finn’s sarcasm and wit was very refreshing, and his mom’s unyielding support for him reminded me of my own mother.
The writing was flawless. The pacing and flow was smooth and moved fast, just how I like it. I’m telling you, those pages flowed like melted butter! Cain’s POV was extremely believable for a high school student.
But in the end, it’s all about the plot. Things aren’t always as they seem with the paranormal, and the mystery and suspense kept me flipping through those pages every night.
Ultimately, Sarah is a haunting and riveting urban tale about what happens when you mess with a ghost. It ain’t pretty! This book is definitely bingeworthy, just make sure you keep your night lights on with this one!
Happy Reading, and I can’t wait to see what else Teri Polen has in store for us!
That’s a Wrap!

Wonderful review! That cover is enough to give me nightmares, lol
Thank you! Yeah, just wait till you start reading it. Talk about a nightmare!
So excited you enjoyed Sarah, Jonny! Thanks so much for your review. Hope she doesn’t keep you up at night – or that you have a spooky attic, lol.
Always welcome. I love spreading the word. I’ll keep my night lights on for a while. O.O
I definitely want to read this. I tend to not find horror books scary but I definitely like the process of trying to find one that does scare me.
This one was creepy in a more urban setting, but definitely worth a try. Even if it doesn’t end up scaring you, its extremely well written. Totally bingeworthy!
I definitely plan on reading more of her books especially after reading and loving The Gemini Connection.
Oh, I had no idea you read that one already. Okay, then you definitely have to check Sarah out. You’ll love it!
Same, Misty. I don’t usually find horror books or movies scary – but I sure do love reading and watching them, lol. Have to admit – Sarah also contains a good dose of humor.
Maybe one day I will find one that I actually find scary lol.
