Series Review: Marianne (Netflix)
Good Morning Horror Writers and Spook Lovers,
Branson was a great writer’s retreat for me. Not only did I get to relax and recharge my creative batteries while writing my sequel, but I got a chance to catch up on some much needed Netflix binges, one of them being the Netflix series Marianne.
Fun fact, I first saw this on Netflix because I’ve pretty much caught up on everything good that’s a Netflix original. However, somehow I didn’t get the time to watch this when it first came out.
It wasn’t until a friend on here recommended this series that I actually gave it a chance, and I’m so glad I did!
Series Blurb:
Famous author Emma Larsimon is haunted by the character Marianne. The witch that she created and the very entity that causes her sleepless nights. Sick of the twisted world she has created, Emma decides to retire from writing, but a bizarre visit from a childhood friend causes her to visit the the very place she swore she would never return. Her hometown.
My Review:
Based off of the preview available for Marianne, I could tell it was going to be one hell of a ride. Man, was I not prepared for the true horror that is this show.
We follow the MC Emma, who has made a great living off of her horror writing since she was fresh out of high school.
She takes a number of things for granted, but when an old friend from her hometown shows up at one of her book signings, everything changes.
According to her old friend, her mother has gone insane from reading her novels, and claims to be the evil spirit from her books named Marianne.
Naturally, Emma thinks this is some kind of practical joke, but when terrifying events begin to occur, she is forced to go back to her hometown, summoning dark memories of the past.
Is what her old friend said about her mother really true? Could Marianne actually be possessing her friend’s mother, and if so, how can she defeat this deadly spirit, who has been invincible throughout her novels?
I absolutely loved this show and am desperately hoping for a season two!
The characters were great, especially Emma. You think you know her, but over time, you learn there is much more to her than meets the eye.
The dark setting of her hometown was also great. A dreary seaside town with a chaotic past, what’s not to love?
The plot was hard to predict, and the mystery was pulled off expertly. I loved all the twists and turns that this season took us on.
But most of all, it’s the true feeling of horror throughout each episode that made me binge it in just a few days. Jump scares, death, and other supernatural chills and thrills await in abundance. The only question is, will you dare to find out what happens?
This is definitely one of my favorite shows for the year, so it should be no surprise that I’m giving it a 9.5/10. Well worth a binge watch!

Have been thinking of re-subbing to Netflix in either December or Jan. After hearing of Marianne now I absolutely need to! Fantastic review.
Ooo, it’s definitely worth it! How long have you been without the netflix? There have been some great shows this year.
Been without it since about the end of July 2019, and was quite busy at the time so didn’t watch much outside of binging Stranger Things 3 the second it came out. Definitely will be trying a lot of series when I get it back again.
Oh okay, that’s not too terribly long. You’ve got a lot of great things to look forward to!
I really loved this one! I watched it right before Halloween and couldn’t stop until the end. I’m really hoping there’s a season 2!
Me too! I binged it in two days, which is crazy for me. I was hooked, and Netflix better not make me sad by not renewing for a second season! I would be so depressed!
