Buddy Read: Please Don’t Tell My Parents I’m a Supervillain (Jonny Pongratz and Misty’s Book Space)

Hello Again Blogging World!

Misty: Hello!! Misty here, my favorite genre is romance but I love reading outside of my comfort zone as well so thanks Jonny for picking something I never would have chosen on my own.

Jonny: Da da da DA! *strikes superhero pose* And this is Jonny, aka Redheaded Justice! Haha, just kidding, that’s a terrible superhero name. But it’s good to be here.

Thanks for taking a leap of faith with me on this read, Misty!

This is our official buddy read of Please Don’t Tell My Parents I’m a supervillain by Richard Roberts, hosted by Misty from Misty’s Book Space and Jonny from Jaunts & Haunts.

Blurb:

Penelope Akk wants to be a superhero. She’s got superhero parents. She’s got the ultimate mad science power, filling her life with crazy gadgets even she doesn’t understand. She has two super powered best friends. In middle school, the line between good and evil looks clear.

In real life, nothing is that clear. All it takes is one hero’s sidekick picking a fight, and Penny and her friends are labeled supervillains. In the process, Penny learns a hard lesson about villainy: She’s good at it.

Criminal masterminds, heroes in power armor, bottles of dragon blood, alien war drones, shape shifters and ghosts, no matter what the super powered world throws at her, Penny and her friends come out on top. They have to. If she can keep winning, maybe she can clear her name before her mom and dad find out.

Alright, so let’s get right into things! We’ve prepared some questions that we’ll both answer, and we hope you enjoy these as much as we did!

1. Supervillains and superheroes are the central theme of this novel. What is your favorite supervillain and superhero and why?

Misty:

I’m going to be totally honest here and say I don’t have a favorite superhero or supervillain. Its just something I’ve never been into. The only thing I can say is I like Spiderman solely because I’ve watched those movies and that’s all.

spiderman

Is that bad?

Jonny:

Not bad at all, to each their own. It’s totally understandable.

Me personally, I love, love, LOVE superheroes ever since my Mom started buying me X-Men comic books in the 90’s. That being said, my answers will be biased towards X-Men despite my love of all superheroes. Superhero: Any member of the X-Men honestly, but my favorite has always been Iceman.

iceman2

One of the originals of the team and an omega level mutant (one of the most powerful of all time!), Iceman has seen so much character progression over the decades, and when his character was revealed as being gay in a 2015 issue, my mind was even more made up.

There are so many worthy supervillains, but the one that takes the cake will always be Dark Phoenix.

darkphoenix

Jean Grey has always been a formidable force, but with her powers being tainted and amplified, she becomes a fiery telekinetic nightmare almost impossible to stop. Definitely gives me chills just thinking about it. The Dark Phoenix saga will always be a very scary but amazing experience in the X-Men comics for me.

2. If you could be a superhero/villain, what would your powers be?

Jonny:

Being realistic here, I would love some time-stopping/slowing abilities so I can get to all the things I’d like to do. Reading, writing, playing video games, the sky’s the limit. Oh wait, I guess I have to help out the world here and there, don’t I? Hmm, I suppose I’ll just show up long enough to stop supervillains with my powers so they can be detained, then it’s back to the Jonny manor!

Misty:

I have to agree with you Jonny. I would love to be able to stop/slow time just so I can be able to do everything I never seem to have time to do but so as not to copy you I will also say I would love to be able to teleport anywhere I want to go. For one I would save a lot of money because I wouldn’t have to pay for travel and I mean to be able to get somewhere in the blink of an eye would save a lot of time and give me time to do whatever it is I want to do.

3. Would you rather be a superhero or a supervillain and why?

Misty:

I would rather be a superhero. I’ve never been a fan of the villain in anything I’ve read or watched I’m team hero all of the time. I also don’t think I would make a very good villain because I have a big heart and I would feel bad and be apologizing for every bad thing I do.

Jonny:

As much as I believe myself to be a badass, I can’t say that I would be a supervillain, but I also can’t say I’d be a superhero either. Being a middle child I had to learn to gauge a situation and read the room, and life for me is all about balance. I would definitely be more of a rogue character. Good in general, but don’t push them very much or you’ll see a volatile darker side. *bares sharp canines*

4. What did you think of the superpowers mentioned in the story?

Misty:

Some of them were your typical super strength type powers which is good but some of the powers just seemed kind of lame in my opinion. I mean our main characters superpower is to blackout and build things that she doesn’t remember building or what they are for most times. Yes, the things she builds has some sort of power thing too but those to her aren’t her power. I don’t know I just don’t think I would be as happy about that particular power as she was. There’s also another character and one of her powers is to just say boom and something blows up. I mean really that just seems lazy to me.

Jonny:

I’m gonna have to agree with Misty here. I wanted to be wowed by the superpowers inherent, but I don’t think any of them quite did it. The main character’s powers are okay, but if you can’t remember anything it makes it quite the chore. Not to mention the fact that some of the things created I was like “…hard pass.”

I did like her bestie’s ability of charm. It’s a very effective weapon when you need it, and it can be used in almost any situation.

That’s A Wrap!

Thanks for joining us on our buddy read of Please Don’t Tell My Parents I’m a Supervillain! We had fun and hope you did too! We will definitely be doing some more buddy reads in the future, so stay tuned!

  1. Great post. Loved your questions and answers. I too would love power over time and space. Iceman and Dark Phoenix are great choices, Jonny. The powers in the book sound very uninteresting.

    • Thanks friend!

      Yes, timey wimey haha.

Yeah, the powers were a bit creative, just not enough or not handled in a way that made them as interesting as they could be. And there are like four more books in the series!

      Hard pass lol.
