Movie Review – Ready or Not (HBO)

readyornot

Movie Blurb:

A bride’s wedding night takes a sinister turn when her eccentric new in-laws force her to take part in a terrifying game.

My Review:

Characters

3.5stars

Quirky, entertaining characters that may lack a little depth, but nonetheless keep our eyes on the screen.

Plot

fourstars

A seemingly simple plot that gets a more complex and riveting over the course of the film.

Flow

fourstars

Pretty good! No unnecessary flashbacks or boring subplots here, and each scene flowed pretty well into the next.

Overall Impression

HBO is really ramping things up lately, I’ve gotta say. In the span of a few days I watched three movies that I really enjoyed. So when I heard that this new arrival to HBO was available to watch, I jumped right on it!

This film was a lot of fun. The premise is simple. Girl gets married unknowingly into a family that has a very strange quirk. You must play a game after getting married. If you draw hide and seek, well … you can figure that out for yourself.

Overall this was a solid movie.

The characters were fun. I liked the sillier ones and how they provided a little humor to the horror. It worked really well. The main character had a believable backstory, and she was funny in spots herself.

The plot was really simple, but it worked. Even when it got more complex over the course of the film, it was still executed well and wasn’t confusing in the least. Flow didn’t really suffer anywhere, and I was happy with the conclusion of this movie.

Overall, this was a really good watch, and I recommend it if you like horror with a little dash of comedy sprinkled in. Happy watching!

Final Score

7/10

    • Yeah, I’d heard of this vaguely but didn’t give it much thought until I saw it was available on HBO. I watched that thing immediately haha.

  1. Good for HBO!

I sat down to watch Visions last night on Netflix. About 15 minutes in I realized I had already seen it, oops. So I started another “horror” movie that turned out to be all gross and no scare. Drats. So I watched a rerun of Paranormal Survivor. Those episodes can get quite scary, actually!

    • Yeah, totally! They also released their HBO Max upgrade for subscribers so I have a lot more content to choose from now.

Aw man, I’m sorry you’re not having the best times with new movies. Sometimes it’s good to just have a nice rewatch. I am a huge fan of Paranormal Witness, though I know it’s not quite the same as Paranormal Survivor.

  2. I really enjoyed this movie. There were things I wish they’d explored more, and I could have done with a bit more dialogue with their swearing, but it was a fun watch.

  3. As Nancy mentioned, I highly recommend Knives Out. It has a classic Agatha Christie vibe to it and an all-around great performance and story to tell! This one also sounds like a lot of fun though. I wish HBO Max was also accessible in Canada!
