Movie Review – Black Christmas (2019) (HBO)
Movie Blurb:
A group of female students are stalked by a stranger during their Christmas break. That is until the young sorority pledges discover that the killer is part of an underground college conspiracy.
My Review:
I’ve been tracking this movie ever since it came out, but due to all the negative reviews I held off on watching it. Luckily, HBO stepped in and made it available, so I gave this one a go. If you ask me there’s not enough Christmas-themed horror movies, so I was excited to see if this was any good.
Overall, I wasn’t completely disappointed, but it could’ve been better.
Like the original, this movie is about a sorority being hunted down by a mysterious killer, only the plot has been revised for modern times to include a conspiracy. I think that the fresh take on the plot worked better this time around. It was simple but entertaining throughout, and I personally enjoyed the new take.
That being said, I think we didn’t get enough depth to make this a great movie. The characters are pretty typical overall, and I think that more original characters or more time with them to flesh them out would have been a wiser move.
The believability was alright, but could’ve been better. When someone goes missing these days it’s always a big deal (even if it’s winter break, doesn’t matter). So for the university’s security to not take things seriously seemed like a throwback thirty years or so and didn’t work for me. Also, the culprit of the attacks was extremely obvious the entire time, and it would’ve been nice to have more mystery around who was responsible.
All in all, this was a fun movie to watch if you like slashers, but I’ve definitely seen better. Worth a fun, non-committal watch!
