Short Story Review: Something in the Woods
Hello chill and thrill seekers,
It’s Thursday! Woohoo, just one more day until Friday. It’s a miracle!
Today I’m sharing another short story review. This time I read Something in the Woods by Harlan Graves.
After reading Fallow Pines (my review here) and loving it, I was ecstatic when I saw there was a sequel to the first story. That’s right, more cryptid horror!
Needless to say, the second I was done with the first story I started the second one. Keep on scrolling for the review, peeps!

A short story of horror in the woods
Four campers embark on a weekend hike through the wilds of Fallow Pines, despite warnings that there is something in the woods…
…there is something in the woods of Fallow Pines. Something that hunts the darkness. Something with an insatiable appetite.

The Review
Wow, this was such a great follow up to Fallow Pines!
Continuing the story, four campers decide to go on a trip to the deadly woods. They soon discover what a grave mistake that was and must fight to survive.
I loved pretty much everything about this short story.
This time, we’re introduced to a new set of MC’s. The four campers were fun with their personalities. They may not have had the same depth that David had in the first story, but the way they interacted with one another definitely made up for that. It was so easy to follow and flowed naturally.
Much like the first story, the plot had me hooked from the beginning. The four campers ignore the good advice given to them to stay away from the pines, but of course they don’t listen. I feel that this story had more horror than the first one did, and I loved that so much! It was a bit more gruesome and you could really feel the characters’ desperation. The tension was ever present. Each scene I could easily picture in my head just like a horror movie, so I was in heaven.
The only thing that irked me a little was the ending, but maybe the author has future plans for this series? I guess we’ll just have to find out!
That’s A Wrap!
Well that’s it for this short story review. I hope you enjoyed it!
Have you read this story? Are there other short stories you’ve read that you simply have to gush about? Feel free to leave a comment. I’d love to start a conversation!
Have a great day!

I love it when the sequel is just as good as the first story!
Yeah, totally! This was actually slightly better in my opinion, which rarely happens at least in my opinion.
Great! Both these stories sound fantastic.
They are! 🙂
The cover is awesome and this one sounds like a fun short story. Interesting that it’s part of a series. Thanks for the review and recommendation. 🙂
Yeah, this one was super fun! I talked with the author, and it’s not the last one! 😍
