Book Review: Thrive (The Overthrow #3)

Why hello there readers!

Can you believe January is almost over? It’s surreal, right? Grad school starts up again tomorrow, and honestly I’m a little nervous. Typically I’ve done some anticipatory reading in advance, but since I’ve been working on my WIP there just hasn’t been time (check out my latest writing update here).

That being said, I finished another read to keep the creative juices flowing. This time I finished The Overthrow series in Thrive (The Overthrow #3) by Kenneth Oppel

So far this series has been a total knockout, and I wanted to make sure I finished what I started before school made things even more difficult, so I hopped right into this one.

Did this series finale do it justice? Let’s find out!

Series Review

Book Review: Bloom (The Overthrow #1)

Book Review: Hatch (The Overthrow #2)

Blurb

The. Aliens. Are. Here. The heart-pounding conclusion to The Overthrow trilogy that began with Bloom and Hatch.

The alien invasion of Earth is imminent. But maybe not all the aliens are united. A rebel faction has reached out to Anaya, saying there’s a way to stop the larger invastion–a way for humans and hybrids and cryptogens to work together. Can they be trusted? Or is this a trap?

It’s not even clear if Anaya, Petra, and Seth are united–some of the hybrids think they’d be better off if the aliens won…

With everything on the line, these three teens will have to decide who they are at their core–alien or human, enemy or friend.

The Review

Loved it!

This was everything I could’ve wanted from a conclusion to this series and then some.

Anaya, Petra, and Seth are telepathically reached out to by a rebel force of cryptogens. As the conditions on Earth ever worsen, they struggle to find trust and hope for the future as they get to know their strange counterparts. Can the hybrids and cryptogens really topple the insurmountable forces stacked against them, or is Earth doomed to be terraformed and enslaved by the alien forces?

I mentioned this in my last review, but I just loved how Oppel didn’t shy away from the darker elements of this story. War and death are examined in a YA context, which is really heartbreaking in spots.

There was nonstop scifi action in every chapter, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, rooting for our beloved heroes. There’s a lot more worldbuilding as we get to examine the cryptogen view of things in detail, which fully fleshed out the threat and what they’re capable of. I also have to say that the climax of this thrilling novel was exhilarating and unforgettable.

Like usual, the characters didn’t disappoint. Seth continues to deal with his demons, struggling to figure out who to trust. Anaya continues to show her bravery in new unexpected ways, and Petra had her own courageous contributions as well. Petra’s still my least favorite but her character is consistent, so I’m not knocking any points down there.

Ultimately, this was a fabulous series that I highly recommend for any scifi lover. I’m definitely going to be trying out more of Oppel’s works in the future, and you should too!
