I LOVE this! It’s so great to see you! I have this problem, especially with words I know more from reading than saying. The first one that springs to mind is anatomy. I know the correct pronunciation, but whenever I see it written, I want to say anna-tomy.
Aww, thank you! Oh I’m the same way. There are so many words I only see in reading that puzzle me. Facetious and calliope are some additional ones I found that I know better now but still am drawn to say them the wrong way.
They are great examples! I’m always disappointed by how calliope sounds, I think it’s much prettier written! 😂
Haha, I’m always tempted to say cal-ee-oop, like alley-oop with a c.
Our melting pot language is so loaded with those kinds of words, Jonny. I’m sure that there are words that I pronounce incorrectly. One of the funny things I noticed when I moved to Oregon is that there are regional variations in pronunciation too. Yeesh! Can you imagine how hard it would be to learn English as a second language. 🙂
Right? It’s maddening really. I got the “spell it like you say it” methodology from the My Favorite Murder podcast. It just makes sense! I can’t even fathom learning English as a second language. Talk about a nightmare!
