Book Review: Eat Your Heart Out

Hey guys!
Guess what? With this post, I am one class lighter and I have earned my reading freedom back! Hoorah! I may take a brief hiatus on reading for the next week so I can focus on the final assignment for my last remaining class, but the end is near. So excited!
Today I’m sharing my review of Eat Your Heart Out by Kelly deVos.
I love zombies and was super excited to give this one a try. Let’s get right into the book review!
Blurb
A YA thriller about a kickass group of teens battling a ravenous group of zombies.
In the next few hours, one of three things will happen.
1–We’ll be rescued (unlikely)
2–We’ll freeze to death (maybe)
3–We’ll be eaten by thin and athletic zombies (odds: excellent)
Vivian Ellenshaw is fat, but she knows she doesn’t need to lose weight, so she’s none too happy to find herself forced into a weight-loss camp’s van with her ex-best friend, Allie, a meathead jock who can barely drive, and the camp owner’s snobby son. And when they arrive at Camp Featherlite at the start of the worst blizzard in the history of Flagstaff, Arizona, it’s clear that something isn’t right.
Vee barely has a chance to meet the other members of her pod, all who seem as unhappy to be at Featherlite as she does, when a camper goes missing down by the lake. Then she spots something horrifying outside in the snow. Something…that isn’t human. Plus, the camp’s supposed “miracle cure” for obesity just seems fishy, and Vee and her fellow campers know they don’t need to be cured. Of anything.
Even worse, it’s not long before Camp Featherlite’s luxurious bungalows are totally overrun with zombies. What starts out as a mission to unravel the camp’s secrets turns into a desperate fight for survival–and not all of the Featherlite campers will make it out alive.

The Review

Several Arizonan teens find themselves being whisked away to a weight-loss camp against their will. When a freak blizzard hits and they are involved in a car accident, they are forced to make the remainder of the trip on foot. They arrive to a strange situation. The emergency power generators are on, and several individuals have gone missing. The teens become increasingly worried as strange events begin to happen and they are offered experimental weight-loss bars by their group leader. As these brave teenagers evaluate their situation, they soon find that Camp Featherlite has it’s own share of secrets, some that have an appetite of their very own.
I really sunk my teeth into this novel, and it bit back!
I’ve never been a fan of any kind of camp, and this book definitely didn’t change my mind.
First and foremost, we have a really great cast of characters here. Vivian took a primary role as the ‘action girl’, which is basically the final girl who survives at the end of a horror movie. Then there’s Sheldon the nerd, Paul the jerk, Rachel the outcast, Allie the basket case, and Steve the jock with a heart of gold. I really enjoyed getting to know each character, and they had a surprising amount of progression and depth throughout the novel that made them easy to root for.
I do think that the cast of characters was a little large, and the using of their roles instead of their names in certain chapters made things a bit more confusing.
That being said, the writing was great. It was blunt and to the point, and some of the scenes written were haunting and blood-chilling. This is definitely a horror book with plenty of gore, violence, and strong language, so be prepared for a brutal fight for survival! Each chapter moved quickly as the chance at survival for our great characters is running out. There were a ton of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat.
I really loved the themes present in this book. There are estranged friendships, grief, and a cautionary hint at the extent to which government and corporate entities can cover horrible incidents up.
If you need a solid horror novel with great characters, nonstop action, and plenty of bite, you can’t go wrong with this one!
That’s A Wrap!
Well that’s it for this book review. I hope you enjoyed it!

This sounds like a book I’d love. I must check it out. Yay for being free to read books you want! 🎉🎉🎉
Totally! I got it through my library, so hopefully yours might have it too. Yes, I already reorganized my purchased books and have been eyeing them. It’s gonna be hard to stick to this brief hiatus lol!
The ebook is very expensive, so I’ll be looking for it in the library too! Good luck keeping to your hiatus! 😊
Right? That’s what I said when I saw the price! Thanks, friend! Hopefully soon I’ll be done with this last assignment for my second class. I’m about halfway through now. Fingers crossed
So it’s not a cozy? OK, I’ll have to pass! Seriously, though, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah, the pink background and pretty art may send some mixed signals. This is definitely a gruesome story! 🙂
