Book Review: Scratches

Hello Beautiful Booksters!
I hope you’ve all been doing well. Summer is definitely coming to Kansas City. I’ll never be ready for the heat but eh, I’ll live. In the meantime, I’m really excited about scheduling some time with friends and family while grad school is out for the summer.
Anywho, I read another book!
This time I read Scratches by Joshua Marsella.
I chose this book from my Kindle Unlimited account. I’ve had this one borrowed for quite some time, like maybe 6 months? So yeah, I was overdue to read this one. On to the book review!

When the son moves his bedroom into the basement he starts to experience an unexplainable and terrifying phenomena. After he uncovers a secret concealed in the house, they quickly learn that some truths are better left a mystery.
Can they overcome their differences in order to survive or will the darkness consume them both?

The Review

I had fun with this novella, though I did have some conflicting thoughts overall.
Twelve year old Connor has always loved horror and the paranormal. He recently moved into a house that belonged to family with his mother Janet and decided to relocate his room to the basement. But when a series of chilling events occur, Connor is determined to find out the cause. As he unravels this mystery, Connor discovers details of his family’s dark past and must dig deep to find the courage to face an even darker present.
First off, I should note that this novel is written in a third-person omniscient POV. I haven’t seen this used very often and while it was effective, sometimes it gave away too much with foreshadowing.
Despite that, I really loved following Connor and Janet as characters. Connor doesn’t know much about his family past. His mother is very stubborn and withholds information, and this created a lot of tension. I really resonated with Connor and his love of the macabre, as I too was a kid that loved all things horror even if it terrified me a bit and made me scared of the dark.
A lot of the plot revolves around the family dynamic and creepy happenings, and things move rather quickly, which had me glued to my seat. The chills weren’t the scariest, but it was enough to keep me engaged. I would have liked more time exploring the paranormal phenomenon to a fuller extent, but this was still a fun read.
If you need some quick chills and thrills, this may be for you!
That’s A Wrap!
Well that’s it for this book review. I hope you enjoyed it!
