Book Review: The Only Light Left Burning (All That’s Left in the World #2)

Hey Readers!
Man, life sure is busy for your guy Jonny over here. With my upcoming book release (my video on that here) and getting ready to start my last semester of grad school in August, I’ve been slacking on the reading front. But I broke through and managed to finish another read.
This time I read The Only Light Left Burning (All That’s Left in the World #2) by Erik J. Brown.
I absolutely adored reading the first book (review link below), so how could I deny a chance at reading the second one? Luckily my library is on top of things when it comes to new books, so this became available pretty quickly after it released back at the end of this May.
Let’s find out how it went!

Blurb
THEY FOUND EACH OTHER. NOW THEY MUST RESCUE WHAT THEY LEFT BEHIND. The highly-anticipated sequel to the queer genre-bending dystopian romance All That’s Left in the World.
Against the backdrop of a ravaged world, Andrew and Jamie have settled in a new community, more in love than ever. Finally they’ve reached safety and have each taken on roles and responsibilities in this new life. But it’s soon clear they want different things:
Jamie is ready to move on and take to the road, just the two of them.
Andrew wants to remain in the safety of numbers.
With a storm brewing up the coast they have no choice to head back into the wilderness where old enemies roam and they don’t know who to trust. Can they find their way back to safety and each other?

The Review

What a great follow up to the first book!
Having escaped the dangerous colony of Fort Caroline, Andrew and Jamison have found a new home in a large community in Florida. But when a hurricane destroys everything they’ve been working to rebuild, they are forced to pack up when Fort Caroline offers to “help.” As Andrew, Jamison, and others try to find a new home in a dangerous landscape, they face a great many more obstacles, finding peace, love, and trust along the way.
Once again, I fell in love with this broken post-apocalyptic world. The human race is still struggling to survive, and I was here for every second of it. There was action and adventure in every chapter, and some great heartfelt moments in between that tugged at my heartstrings.
Andrew and Jamison are great gay protagonists, and I dare to say that we need more like them in the world of fiction. Jamison grappled with his fears and uncertainty, while Andrew adapts to his changing role in the world and those around him. I also loved all the great side characters like Amy, the Kid, Taylor, and others. They all felt three-dimensional and real as I read along.
The writing was great like last time, and there were plenty of twists and turns to hold my interest, as well as some additional surprises sprinkled in. I especially appreciate the optimistic tone of this book given how dire and hopeless the situation feels much of the time.
Honestly, I have zero complaints. This series is a must read if you like apocalyptic fiction and adventure that doesn’t let up. Give it a try!
That’s A Wrap!
