The Review

I had a really fun time with this middle grade superhero novel!

Alex Knight has lived in the Cloak society’s headquarters for as long as he can remember. They live in an underground multilevel bunker with other supervillains determined to dismantle their archenemy the Rangers of Justice. Alex has been training his telekinetic abilities for years to make him dreams of greatness a reality, but when he saves one of his enemies from certain death he struggles to understand what’s happening to him. Was it just a fluke, or is he not cut out to be a supervillain after all?

This was great from start to end.

Alex was a great main character. At first I was worried I wouldn’t like him due to his supervillain in training status, but underneath his bad guy persona, he’s battling the ideals from his upbringing and the emotions he feels deep inside. This kind of split was interesting to experience, and it made his story hard to put down. I also really liked other characters like Gage, Kirbie, and Misty. They all had different personalities and unique dialogue that made them feel real.

I also really loved the themes tackled in this novel like bullying, self-actualization and empowerment, and finding your voice. Middle grade books are known for this, and I think they were the right themes to explore with the story.

As far as plot goes, this book was action-packed with small breaks in between, which created a nice balance. I loved all the superhero battles and the mystery that Alex unravels chapter by chapter. There’s also a dark note to the story but it doesn’t go too far, which I appreciated.

Overall, if you need a good superhero fantasy book, you can’t go wrong with this one!
