Book Review: The Haunting of Lavender Raine (Lavender Raine #1)

Hey hey hey readers!

How’s life treating ya? Well I hope. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m already in a fall mood. It’s the best season, isn’t it? I just love everything about it. The scents, the weather, that slight chill in the air. It’s simply magical. I recently made some recent book purchases for fall time, but I’m trying not to read them just yet, so I dove into my Kindle backlog this time around.

Today I’m sharing my review of The Haunting of Lavender Raine (Lavender Raine #1) by Jessica Renwick.

I’ve read nearly every book to date by this author and I’ve loved pretty much everything, so I figured I’d give this series a shot. It’s got a very fall time vibe, so what’s not to love?

Let’s see how this one went!

Blurb

Despite the fact that her mother is obsessed with the paranormal, thirteen-year-old Lavender Raine does not believe in ghosts. Or spirits. Or specters—or whatever you want to call them. But when her cat bolts into the woods and she chases after him, they are confronted by a chilling presence that puts her belief to the test. With her grandmother’s necklace disappearing, her best friend having boy trouble, and that ghost—or whatever it is—showing up at every turn, things keep getting worse. With help from her quirky friend, Rosie, and her sassy cat, Blot, can Lavender find the necklace and get rid of the ghost haunting her?

The Review

I had fun with this book! If you want some light paranormal thrills and a dash of mystery, this book’s for you.

Lavender Raine lives with her paranormal enthusiast mom. Her grandma recently passed away, and she feels guilty that she was too nervous to visit her before she passed. That’s why she’s heartbroken when the locket her grandma gave her mom is lost while out one night. Desperate, Lavender enlists the help of a close friend to help her find it, unknowing of the paranormal journey she’s about to embark on.

This was a nice short read. With Renwick’s works, I always know it’ll be well written and will flow very nicely. It’s great for a binge read.

Lavender is a responsible girl with a good head on her shoulders. She’s a skeptic of the paranormal, but her beliefs are questioned when events start to unfold. I wanted to get to know her a little better, so I’m hopeful that the other books will flesh her out a bit more as the adventures continue.

The plot was fun and mysterious. This had a slightly cozy feel to it that I really enjoyed, but enough thrills to keep me entertained from page to page. There’s also some nice themes in here like grief and bullying that are perfect for a younger reader. This is a perfect book to introduce tweens to the paranormal genre without terrifying them, or if you’re an adult, a nice easy read to curl up with.

That’s A Wrap!

Well that’s it for this book review. I hope you enjoyed it!

Have you read this book? Are there other similar books you’ve read that you simply have to gush about? Feel free to leave a comment. I’d love to start a conversation!
