Graphic Novel Review: Ember and the Island of Lost Creatures

Hello Book Lovers,

I hope you had a wonderful holiday celebration with friends and family. This year I got to host my family’s Christmas celebration on Christmas Eve, then me and the boyfriend enjoyed a cozy and quiet Christmas day together.

With all that awesome downtime, you know I had to do some reading! Today I’m going over my experience with Ember and the Island of Lost Creatures by Jason Pamment.

Alright, so this was a purchase from earlier this year, but grad school kept forcing it further and further down my list. The art and blurb made this seem like such a cute graphic novel, so I couldn’t resist giving it a go. Let’s see how it went!

Blurb

From Treasure in the Lake ’s Jason Pamment comes a story of friendship and self-discovery, in a gorgeously illustrated world perfect for fans of Hilda and Over the Garden Wall . Fitting in can be hard, especially when you’re as small as Ember, a tiny boy living alone in a city of giants. But Ember’s luck changes when he meets Lua, a kindly sea turtle, who escorts him across the ocean to a school for little creatures on a wondrous island. Here, Ember learns that first days can be hard, too—especially when they involve bizarre, fantastical cave-dwellers, ferocious storms, and classmates that, from the very start, aren’t at all interested in making friends. As he struggles to adapt to this new world, Ember finds himself at the heart of an otherworldly mystery, facing a strange monster from the deep that threatens everything he holds dear. On the surface, Ember’s classmates may seem of little help, but any good student of nature knows appearances can be deceiving—and friendship can come from the most unexpected of places.

The Review

This was a fantastic and lighthearted graphic novel!

Ember is a tiny being that lives in a city of giant humans. He’s always longed to have friends, but when he makes a go of it disaster ensues. Under the care of a loving sea turtle named Lua, she takes him to a magical island of misfit beings to find belonging, but can Ember make new friends in this bizarre new place?

Gosh, I just loved this novel to pieces. It had such a warm and loving vibe to it that it was really uplifting and just made me smile. Sometimes you just need that in a read.

The art was stunning. Each page was a masterful work of art, and that made this story very hard to put down (I finished it in two reading sessions).

Ember is such a kindhearted and curious young being. It’s not very clear whether he’s human or not, but I really enjoyed his infectious positivity and determination. Each of the inhabitants of the island were very interesting and had their own distinct personality that made things more fun. Bullying was a central theme to this novel, and it was presented in a way that didn’t overly preach and was educational for younger readers.

There was plenty of action and adventure, and I’d say this is more along the cozy side. If you love a lighthearted story with plenty of action, adventure, and fantasy elements, this is a perfect read to take a chance on!

That’s A Wrap!

Well that’s it for this graphic novel review. I hope you enjoyed it!
