Series Review: Black Mirror, Season 7

Oh my gosh I have been so excited about this new season of Black Mirror! So the last season wasn’t as amazing as I wanted it to be, but I had high hopes for this season from what I saw of the trailer (posted below in case you wanna check it out).
I’ve been watching this series for a long time so I binged this one quick. Let’s see how it went!
Blurb
Featuring stand-alone dramas — sharp, suspenseful, satirical tales that explore techno-paranoia — “Black Mirror” is a contemporary reworking of “The Twilight Zone” with stories that tap into the collective unease about the modern world.

The Review

Overall, I’m really happy with this season. The episodes covered some series social issues and most of them really hit the mark. Here’s my spoiler-light breakdown of the episodes.
Common People
A husband’s wife has a traumatic brain injury and undergoes an experimental high-tech procedure to fix it with unforeseen consequences. This one had a ton of heart and really hit the issue of how expensive medical treatment is nowadays and how individuals are forced to get creative just to live.
Bête Noire
A young expert on food is unnerved when her former classmate Verity joins the workforce and odd things begin to happen. This one had a lot of promise, and though I wanted more out of the ending once all is revealed, I appreciated the theme of bullying and the overall acting was superb.
Hotel Reverie
A high-tech remake of a classic film goes awry, endangering the life of the leading actress as she is stuck in a simulation. This was my least favorite of the bunch. Normally I love Issa Rae, and I’m not sure if it was her acting or the script itself but it was a little disappointing. Her costar, however, was phenomenal.
Plaything
A strange man is interrogated and reveals a surprisingly odd phenomenon that began with a 1990s video game centered on evolving artificial beings. I really enjoyed the nod to Bandersnatch, but I wanted more from the ending. I was just getting invested in the story when it was over.
Eulogy
A man relives his memories of a recently deceased woman at the request of their family, sparking long dormant feelings. This was a very emotional episode and I loved every minute of it.
USS Callister: Into Infinity
A continuation of the USS Callister, the crew struggles to find a way to survive in the game as the investigation into the company that created the game gets serious. I really enjoyed this sequel episode. Lots of action, intrigue, and mystery. Hopefully we’ll get more in the future!
That’s A Wrap!
