Book Review: The Space Between Worlds (The Space Between Worlds #1)

Hello hello interdimensional travelers!
Welcome back to another book review. I wanted to read something that was a little different, so I looked at my TBR and thought The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson would be fun.
This book caught my eye with the stunning cover. Also, there’s supposedly a bi character in the book and I haven’t read many books with that kind of representation.
Okay, let’s see how it went!
Blurb
An outsider who can travel between worlds discovers a secret that threatens her new home and her fragile place in it, in a stunning sci-fi debut that’s both a cross-dimensional adventure and a powerful examination of identity, privilege, and belonging.
Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there’s just one catch: No one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying—from disease, turf wars, or vendettas they couldn’t outrun. Cara’s life has been cut short on 372 worlds in total.
On this Earth, however, Cara has survived. Identified as an outlier and therefore a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, Cara is plucked from the dirt of the wastelands. Now she has a nice apartment on the lower levels of the wealthy and walled-off Wiley City. She works—and shamelessly flirts—with her enticing yet aloof handler, Dell, as the two women collect off-world data for the Eldridge Institute. She even occasionally leaves the city to visit her family in the wastes, though she struggles to feel at home in either place. So long as she can keep her head down and avoid trouble, Cara is on a sure path to citizenship and security.
But trouble finds Cara when one of her eight remaining doppelgängers dies under mysterious circumstances, plunging her into a new world with an old secret. What she discovers will connect her past and her future in ways she could have never imagined—and reveal her own role in a plot that endangers not just her world, but the entire multiverse.

The Review

Hmm, I’m not mad about this book, but it didn’t blow me away either.
This book is set in an alternate Earth where worlds are traversed and the wealth of Wiley City looks down upon the poor rural desert of Ashtown. Cara has spent the past few years as a traverser, but when she finds herself stuck in another alternate Earth it changes everything she thinks she knows about her world.
First things first, I loved this cover. It just looks so epic, and the scifi vibes throughout this book were really great. I loved that element and how we got to learn more about the world travelling first hand. It was really fascinating, and I loved the comparisons with different versions of the people she knows on her world from the one’s she is visiting.
Cara was an enigma of a main character that kept me interested. She’s quick on the draw and has a no-nonsense way of speaking that I really loved. She also has a lot of secrets that really shocked me and kept me going. Cara is bi, and I really enjoyed the representation and how her sexuality was explored. It felt authentic.
My biggest complaint with this book is the pacing. When the action and fast-moving bits are in play it’s really great, but there were too many slow pauses that made it a slog in certain parts.
Despite that, if you like scifi vibes, parallel worlds, and a cool main character I think you’ll really enjoy this one.
That’s A Wrap!
