Graphic Novel Review: Bad Dreams in the Night

Hi Bookworms!
Halloween is approaching fast, and if you know my horror-loving self then you can probably guess that I’m aching for some creepy stories.
Today I’m excited to share my review of Bad Dreams in the Night by Adam Ellis.
I’ve been follow Adam aka Adam Tots on Instagram for what feels like an eternity, and I was always captivated by his comic strips that he posts on there. It wasn’t until recently when he mentioned an upcoming release that I realized I’ve been living under a rock! So to make up for lost time I delved into the first graphic novel of his that I could get my grubby mitts on.
Let’s see how it went!
Blurb
Like a graphic novel version of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark , this collection of original horror tales is packed with urban legends, terrifying twists, and delightfully haunted stories by one of the biggest stars in webcomics. Each story will make you scream for more!
A new take on a classic format, Bad Dreams in the Night is an updated, illustrated take on the horror anthologies the author grew up with as a kid, such as Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and In a Dark, Dark Room . These self-contained stories grew rapidly in popularity among the author’s online audience, and even inspired production of a motion picture from Buzzfeed Studios and Lionsgate Films. Filled with spine-tingling, pulse-increasing tales of mystery and supernatural occurrences, this book of never-before-seen comics will be the perfect gift for people who love Black Mirror and Stranger Things and listened to podcasts like Welcome to Nightvale and Rabbits.

The Review

This graphic novel was everything I hoped it would be and then some!
While a fan of Adam “Tots” Ellis, this is my first read of his work outside of Instagram and it was nostalgic, scary, and captivating.
Ellis’s art style is unique, beautiful, and expertly executed from story to story. Each story can differ in length a bit, but they are easy to read through, about several minutes each. I had to intentionally slow myself down so I could fully appreciate the artwork because I lost myself in all the great stories. I ended up blazing through the whole thing in one go, so this was a quick read, but not forgettable by any means. Each story had a short afterword that explained the personal inspiration behind the idea. It was a nice cherry on top of the scary sundae!
My favorite story that comes to mind is Hangnail. It was really great and had this horror comedy mashup that I just loved. Speaking of that, some of the stories have lots of humor while others stuck to a more somber or dark tone throughout, and it created this great balance overall.
I’m gonna keep this review short because I’m still just gob smacked about how awesome this read was. I need more!
That’s A Wrap!
Well that’s it for this graphic novel review. If you like what you see, please consider leaving a tip!
