Book Review: Sister, Maiden, Monster

Hello Readers!
With my recent move, things have been sooo busy. Luckily I’m not living out of boxes anymore so I just needed a mental break, which means more reading!
Today I’m sharing my thoughts on Sister, Maiden, Monster by Lucy A. Snyder.
This novel has been on my TBR for a couple years now, and it’s a long term goal to prioritize promising reads from my TBR, so this seemed perfect for spooky season. This is my first read by this author so I didn’t know what to expect, but I was excited.
Let’s see how things went!

Sister, Maiden, Monster is a visceral story set in the aftermath of our planet’s disastrous transformation and told through the eyes of three women trying to survive the nightmare, from Bram Stoker Award-winning author Lucy A. Snyder.
To survive they must evolve.
A virus tears across the globe, transforming its victims in nightmarish ways. As the world collapses, dark forces pull a small group of women together.
Erin, once quiet and closeted, acquires an appetite for a woman and her brain. Why does forbidden fruit taste so good?
Savannah, a professional BDSM switch, discovers a new turn-on: committing brutal murders for her eldritch masters.
Mareva, plagued with chronic tumors, is too horrified to acknowledge her divine role in the coming apocalypse, and as her growths multiply, so too does her desperation.
Inspired by her Bram Stoker Award-winning story “Magdala Amygdala,” Lucy A. Snyder delivers a cosmic tale about the planet’s disastrous transformation … and what we become after.

The Review

This book was unique and unforgettable.
Three individuals struggle to make sense of a terrifying pandemic that is rapidly growing out of control, sending them on horrific paths that will alter the course of planet Earth.
I just loved the sense of dread in every chapter. It kept my eyes glued to the page, and all of the developments were really terrifying. I seriously hope nothing like this ever happens!
The characters were really great. Erin and Mareva were my favorites. They were the most human of the three, and they did all that they could to adapt and survive. Savannah was … gross to me, but I got why she was an important character. All three characters’ paths intertwined and made the story more compelling.
Every chapter moved at a very fast pace, which I love, and it spiraled into a nightmare of epic proportions pretty quickly. Lots of post apocalyptic and Lovecraftian vibes throughout, and the writing was very solid. I did wish that the ending wasn’t so abrupt and gave me a true ending, but other than that, I really enjoyed this one.
This book isn’t for the faint of heart, but if you love horror with lots of dread and gorey goings on, I think you’ll enjoy this!
That’s A Wrap!
