Book Review: A Spindle Splintered (Fractured Fables #1)

Greetings knights and fair maidens,

Though I’m not the biggest Disney fan these days, I still really enjoy the magic of fairytales. And what better way to explore that than in a book?

Today I’m reviewing A Spindle Splintered (Fractured Fables #1) by Alix E. Harrow

After my book buddy Misty and I decided to DNF the rest of the Goosebumps Horrorland series, one series she recommended we try is this one. After looking at the blurb and previewing the first page, I was hooked! Before we begin the review, this post is my individual review, then I’ll make a separate post where Misty and I gab about our experience with this book. Sound good?

Alright, here we go!

Blurb

It’s Zinnia Gray’s twenty-first birthday, which is extra-special because it’s the last birthday she’ll ever have. When she was young, an industrial accident left Zinnia with a rare condition. Not much is known about her illness, just that no one has lived past twenty-one.

Her best friend Charm is intent on making Zinnia’s last birthday special with a full sleeping beauty experience, complete with a tower and a spinning wheel. But when Zinnia pricks her finger, something strange and unexpected happens, and she finds herself falling through worlds, with another sleeping beauty, just as desperate to escape her fate.

The Review

What a fun fairytale adventure!

Zinnia Gray just turned 21, and most 21-year olds would be excited. But Zinnia is living on borrowed time with a terminal condition. Having daydreamed of the fairytale Sleeping Beauty for most of her life, Zinnia knows that fairytales are just that. That is, until a sudden prick from an old spindle catapults her into a fantasy world and changes everything she knows.

I really enjoyed this feminist and modern take on Sleeping Beauty. There was a really great balance between plot and character building that I loved, and the fantasy vibes were prominent, which I prefer. I also loved that the writing was easy to understand and blaze through.

Zinnia is a smart woman, but her condition has always been a chip on her shoulder. I liked her progression and how her way of thinking changed as she learned more about the fantasy world she’s in and considers her own mortality. Charm was a reliable pillar of support, and I loved the sass of Zinnia and Charm combined. It made them feel very three-dimensional.

The plot moves fast with adventure and fantasy at every turn, and though this is a short read, I think anyone who’s spent time with their head in the clouds would enjoy this book. Can’t wait to read the next one!

That’s A Wrap!
