Book Review: Cicada (Killer VHS #4)

Can you hear the cicadas, bookworms?
Okay, okay, it’s too early in the year for them to come out (late spring/early summer is when they do), but if you’ve been following this blog of mine you know I have a weakness for creature features. I recently connected with the author on social media and was shocked that I’ve been sleeping on the Killer VHS series.
Today I’m reviewing Cicada (Killer VHS #4) by Tanya Pell.
Fun fact, if you’re a Kobo Plus subscriber, the entirety of this series is free to read! Needless to say I added this book to my Kobo Plus account and started reading right away. Let’s see how it went!

Blurb
Ash is stranded at a rural horror film festival about a giant killer cicada and can’t decide what’s worse, the movie or her idiot boyfriend, until she realizes she’s starring in the bloody sequel when people start dying and the locals won’t let them leave.

The Review

I’ll never think of cicadas the same way after this read!
Ash is on a road trip with her awful boyfriend Richie. As they bicker amongst each other on an emptying gas tank, they come across a strange small town. Residents’ smiles are too wide, and visitors crowd in from all across the nation for a found footage film centered around cicadas. As Ash questions the bizarre vibes she’s getting, the dark secrets of the small town linger underneath the surface, eager to emerge.
This is my first read by this author and it definitely won’t be the last.
What truly shined in this story was the characters. From the first page, I knew I was going to like Ash. She’s smart, resourceful, and doesn’t take crap from anyone. I really enjoyed her growth in this book, and the other characters felt three-dimensional too. Cal, Charlie, Eileen, and even Richie were all great and I loved the realistic dialogue and actions they take as things go from bad to nightmare fuel at a rapid pace.
The plot was amazing! There’s a growing sense of unease in each chapter, and the mystery was intriguing. Thrills, chills, and action at every turn made this riveting from beginning to end, and I really can’t recommend this creature feature enough!
Highly, highly recommend!
That’s A Wrap!
