Short Story Review: Pixel Perfect: A Y2K Horror Story
![]()
Hey Nostalgia Lovers,
Don’t you just love a trip down memory lane? If you’ve been following me for a while, then you probably know that nostalgia is a powerful driving force for me.
That definitely influenced my read of Pixel Perfect by Renee Thomasin.
These days I’ve been using Instagram a lot more, and through that I’ve been finding some great new authors and friends. Renee is one of them, and when I saw the cover of this short story I just had to give it a go!
Let’s see how this quick read went!
Blurb
When an anonymous bully rattles Kate’s self confidence after a talent show, she is desperate to look just like the pop star posters on her bedroom walls. Lost in the toxic online world of thinspo blogs, she meets Ana, a digital stranger who convinces Kate to accept a deal that will transform her into her own thinspo. But there is a cost for everything. How far is Kate willing to go to become pixel perfect?

What a fun, terrifying nostalgia read!
Kate hates that she’s overweight and will do anything to make weight loss a reality. When she receives a chat request from a random girl on AIM, she embarks on a dark path to see just how far she’s willing to go to be thin.
I loved all of the great nostalgia and how easily it fit into the story without being overbearing. This story had a theme of body dysmorphia that was covered in a very real way. It really captured how invasive those thoughts can be and how it can blind you.
Kate was easy to relate to. She’s talented and cares about her friends, but she’s so caught up in her obsession to get thinner that it affects every facet of her life.
Very nice, quick pace with this one. The chills were different than your average read, and it was refreshing. Pink horror is quickly becoming my new obsession, and I had a blast with this one. You will too!
That’s A Wrap!
Well that’s it for this book review. Like what you see? Leave a tip!
