Book Review: First Team (Marvel Aconyte Novels)

What’s up readers?

Not much over here. Birthdays, graduation, typical beginning of summer stuff. I’ve been wanting a brief break from horror lately, so I decided to read one of the superhero novels I’ve been collecting for a while now.

This post is all about Marvel: Xavier Institue – First Team by Robbie MacNiven.

Not so fun fact, the Marvel Aconyte novels are largely out of print, so it’s been something of an obsession of mine to have them all before no more copies are available. There are 31 I believe and I have 7 of them right now, so wish me luck.

Okay, let’s get right into this review!

Blurb

Victor Borkowski – aka Anole – has adjusted well to life at Xavier’s Institute, gaining control over his reptilian mutant powers and the respect of his fellow students. However, when he discovers that his parents have been kidnapped by anti-mutant extremists, the Purifiers, Victor’s discipline and trust in the X-Men is strained to breaking point. Setting out alone in defiance of his instructors, he’s quickly in serious trouble. It isn’t just the fanatical Purifiers threatening his family, there’s a villainous scientist waiting to get hold of Victor himself. Maybe he can’t do this by himself after all…

The Review

This was my first read from the Aconyte novels, and I had a great time!

This story centers on Anole, Cipher, and Graymalkin. Anole has been having a tough time at the Institute. Cyclops gives him a break and Anole returns home, only to run into trouble with an anti-mutant group known as the Purifiers. In the chaos, his father is taken. Anole and his close friends Cipher and Graymalkin embark on a journey to save Anole’s father and punish the terrible individuals responsible for his capture.

I really loved this mutant lineup. Prior to reading this I wasn’t very aware of the three MC mutants or their powers, so it all felt refreshing and new to me.

Anole is a bit of a hothead, Cipher is calm, cool, and collected, and Graymalkin is introverted.  They each have their own distinct personalities that worked well in an intriguing friendship, and I loved all their banter throughout the novel.

The mystery behind who the Purifiers were was exciting and kept me on the edge of my seat, and I loved all the superpowered battles and twists and turns along the way. This is something of a slower burn, but if you love anything X-Men you’ve got to try out this book!

That’s A Wrap!
