Howdy dowdy readers!

Summer’s in full effect, and I’m living my Summerween fantasy by staying inside and reading all the spooky books I can get my hands on. It’s been quite a while since I read a graphic novel and I needed a quick read, so today’s post is all about Anya’s Ghost by Vera Brosgol.

I got my physical copy of this book last year when I went to Half Price Books. I honestly didn’t know much about this author or the book, just that I needed some creepy vibes.

Let’s see how this read went, shall we?

The Review

All the spectral stars for this gem of a graphic novel!

Anya’s lived most of her life in America, but fitting in seems impossible at her high school. Frustrated with few friends and her family, she goes on a walk when disaster strikes and she falls down a hole in the ground. Trapped, she is terrified to find the ghostly spirit of a young woman her age. Who is this ghost? Is she a friend, or does she have darker intentions?

I loved Anya as the main character! Sure, she’s easily annoyed, headstrong, and sometimes irresponsible, but underneath it she’s a brilliant young woman. I like how much she grows throughout a short time, and the ghost Emily was fun to figure out as well.

Did I mention the art? It’s gorgeous! It was all done in shades of black, white, and gray, but the art style just leaps off the page and pulls you in.

Pacing was perfect. The story moved quickly with a lot of mystery and light thrills, and it captivated me from beginning to end. Seriously, no complaints here. This graphic novel is perfect! Very highly recommend!
