Book Review: Rotten Tommy

Happy October Bookworms!

What fall stuff are you getting into? I purposefully didn’t schedule any book events this month so that I could spend some quality time with my boyfriend and just enjoy the change of season.

With spooky season in full swing, that means more horror reads!

Today’s book review is all about Rotten Tommy by David Sodergren.

I’m a big fan of Sodergren. To date I’ve read The Forgotten Island, The Haar, and Hard Luck Jenny, and I’ve truly enjoyed them all. I bought a physical copy of this book, and I had very high hopes going in.

Let’s see how it went!

“Keep the door locked night and day…”

It’s been forty years since Becky Sharp’s mother vanished without a trace. Becky has given up all hope of finding her, until she makes a strange discovery that may hold the key to solving her mother’s disappearance.

Three unmarked videotapes, hidden in the wall of her childhood home. And as Becky watches the tapes, she finds herself drawn into a horrific mystery far greater than she could possibly have imagined.

For Becky has unwittingly summoned a long-forgotten nightmare—a creature that threatens the lives and sanity of all around her. Rotten Tommy has come to play… and nothing on Earth can sate his diabolical bloodlust.

The Review

Holy moly, this was exquisite!

Becky’s mother vanished forty years ago. Despite that trauma and her high functioning autism diagnosis, she lives a relatively comfortable life with her husband John. But when a home renovation unearths a bizarre series of tapes from a demented children’s TV show, Becky embarks on a dark journey that will change her entire life.

This was like a darker version of Channel Zero, and I loved every second of it. The story straddles the line between reality and fiction, normality and mayhem. As always, the writing was expertly done and easy to read. It was so hard to put this one down!

Becky was an intriguing main character, and I loved that she wasn’t defined by her autism. She had a lot of growth along the way on her travels, and John, her sister Flora, and the charming Larkin helped add more to the story.

The pacing was fast throughout this book. Each chapter had really big developments with lots of mystery and oodles of bloody battles, culminating in a fabulous ending that I didn’t see coming. I have absolutely zero complaints with this novel. If you love blood, gore, and a great story with depth, you’re gonna love this one.

That’s A Wrap!
