Book Review: Undead, Kansas

Halloween is almost here, can you believe it?

Tell me all about your big plans if you have any in the comments. I’d love to hear what you’re up to!

With Halloween so close it’s time for another spooky book review. Today’s book review is all about Undead, Kansas by L.C. Mortimer.

I’ve been friends with this local KC author for a few years, and when we both vended at Boozy Bookfest this year I just had to try one of her works. This one really stood out to me, so I decided to give it a try!

Let’s see how it went!

Blurb

The dead are rising in Lawrence, Kansas, and no one is safe.

For Mike Smith, every day is the boring, monotonous, disappointing. He works a job where he feels like a failure. His only solace is in his cat, Penguin, but soon he doesn’t even have her.

Abby Portwood has lost her husband and her job. The only thing keeping her going is her son, Zack, who is at daycare when the dead begin to rise.

Two strangers.

Two intertwining lives.

Two desperate races for survival.

When monsters invade the library, Mike and Abby are forced to run away, to escape, to fight.

But Lawrence only has so many places to hide, and the dead are everywhere.

The Review

I love zombie novels, and this one didn’t disappoint!

Mike lives a simple life working in a library. That all changes when the dead come back to life and start eating the living. As he and a patron Abby flee, they begin a long journey to find her son, safety, and a way forward in the impossible situation.

This story gripped me from the first page and didn’t let go. I don’t like a long build up, and I was thrown right into the conflict just like I wanted. The writing is easy to read and understand, and this is definitely very bingeable. It was hard to put down.

I really enjoyed all of the characters. Mike has an interesting history that shaped his decisions, and so did Casey and Abby. They had different viewpoints that kept things fresh through their dialogue and actions. There were also a number of other brief characters that added to the story as well.

If you like zombies and fast paced action against a grim backdrop of the apocalypse, I think you’ll have a good time with this one!

That’s A Wrap!

Well that’s it for this book review. Like what you see? Leave a tip!

Have you read this book? Are there other similar books you’ve read that you simply have to gush about? Feel free to leave a comment. I’d love to start a conversation!

Have a great day!
