Series Review: The Magicians, Season Two (Netflix)

magicians2

Series Blurb (Rotten Tomatoes):

Season 2 of the fantasy series picks up right after the previous season’s final episode. When it’s revealed that nobody was killed and everybody is just fine, Julia (Stella Maeve) strikes a deal with the Beast (Charles Mesure) in order to take down Reynard (Mackenzie Astin). As Quentin (Jason Ralph), Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley), Penny (Arjun Gupta) and Margo (Summer Bishil) embark upon a quest to find a new weapon to kill the Beast and go back to their world, Eliot (Hale Appleman) struggles with being a king and Julia is forced to continue her descent into the dark side.

Things take a turn for the worst when one of the young magicians is put in mortal peril and another loses her shade. And when they finally make it back to their world they realize the war is not over.

My Review:

Characters

five-star-rating-md

Our same beloved cast of characters maintain personality and nerve while new and existing threats continue to challenge them. They manage to shine despite the avalanche of hardships that occur.

Plot

four-and-a-half-star-rating-md

Not quite as strong of a premise as the first one (honestly, that’s nearly impossible to beat), but still unbelievably entertaining and riveting.

Flow

fourstars

Again, not quite as strong as the first season, but well-executed. There were several scenes and subplots where my mind wandered just a tad, but once the situation reaches critical mass I was blown away.

Overall Impression

I am rewatching this series in anticipation of watching the third and fourth seasons (currently in fifth season on Syfy).

With the group’s failure in season one, this season starts with defeat and desperation. Through resilience and perseverance, our beloved characters manage to rise again and beat the odds, making valiant strides towards making Fillory a peaceful world.

Though overall the plot and flow weren’t quite as strong as the first season, I was still hooked the whole time and can’t wait for season three and four!

Final Score

8.5/10

  1. I have seen the 2nd season of The Magicians, and I liked it, but not as much as the first season. I saw an episode of Sabrina last night, from season 3, and I happily realized that I like all 3 seasons of Sabrina equally well.:-)
