Why Do You Read?
Good Morning!
It’s been a while since I’ve posted an opinion post. To be honest, I’ve had great ideas in the past month or two, but simply lacked the time to jot things down as they come to me and actually write out something.
I want to keep things simple, so today’s question is an easy one. Why do you read?
I’ve always had a healthy curiosity on what inspires people to read (besides myself, of course), and I saw a post from Quora and another article online that lead me to writing this out now.
I grew up with books. My parents were always supportive of me reading, but they didn’t necessarily stress it either. I think they just wanted me to follow my passions, whatever that may be.
Needless to say, I love books, reading, and writing!
The book store was a place of wonder any time I went. The possibilities were endless! What world would this book open? Or what about that one? How can anyone just pick one book?
Ironically, over the years that childish glee has never really escaped me. I still see books in that same light for the most part.
An Escape
For me, books have always been an escape. Obviously as a kid, I simply wanted to go to a magical fantasy land filled with wonder and excitement. Nowadays I do escape, but more to escape reality. I do want to get back to where I don’t feel the need to escape reality so strongly, but unless my dayjob suddenly changes I don’t see that happening.
I Love Good, Entertaining Stories
I also simply love a good story. A well-written story that touches you, that gets the blood pumping or makes you think (not too much though, just my preference). That’s what I want in a book.
A Good Way to Unwind and De-stress
Let’s face it, after a stressful day, it’s so easy to just turn on the TV these days. While I watch plenty of TV, sometimes it just can’t give you what you really need. Not like a book can. Books are a great way to destress and push aside whatever happened during your day.
So how about it folks? Why do you read? Is it an informational quest? Are you an escapist like me? Do you simply like to unwind after a busy day?
Tell me all about your opinion in the comments!
Thanks for stopping by, and have a great day!

I read to escape, yes. At other times I’ll read a classic or a recent novel of critical success and dissect it; what makes it so good? Then, just for my own edification, I’ll pick up a nonfiction book now and then to, you know, learn something.:-)
Oh, I really like your reasons for reading!
I’ve always been a quick learner, but for some reason nonfiction doesn’t really speak to me, though I do have some on my TBR.
Dissecting a classic sounds like fun, I’ll have to try that sometime!
I read for all the same reasons as you but I also just enjoy it and being able to live multiple lives. It’s like I get to go on an adventure from the comforts of my own home because my day to day life is pretty boring.
That’s so true! I also find day to day life to be a bit drab, but really enjoy the crazy adventures I get to go on in book form.
