Movie Review – Watchmen
Movie Blurb:
In 1985 where former superheroes exist, the murder of a colleague sends active vigilante Rorschach into his own sprawling investigation, uncovering something that could completely change the course of history as we know it.
My Review:
Characters
Characters are vivid, unique, and unforgettable, each with their own dark secrets.
Plot
Former superheroes are being hunted down. What’s worse, the world is on the brink of nuclear holocaust. Can’t get more interesting or high stakes than that.
Flow
Though the occasional flashback may bring us out of the present plotlines a bit, it adds depth and meaning to the story that is unfolding before us.
Overall Impression
Obviously with my reading of the Watchmen graphic novel and Watchmen series on HBO, I had to rewatch this from my dusty old DVD collection.
This movie closely follows the graphic novel series, following a collection of former superheroes as they struggle to figure out who’s killing them off while the entire world is in jeopardy in a nuclear arms race.
The characters were unique and interesting, the plot ominous and tantalizing, and the film overall was executed nearly perfectly. I loved all the action and the great buildup. Even the flashbacks added depth to the story.
Though I don’t agree with the portrayal of the ending, this film adaptation of the graphic novel is perfect for someone who isn’t necessarily into graphic novels or simply wants to watch a great film that explores the darker concepts of superheroism, politics, and just how far people will go to save their world from destruction.
Final Score
9/10
