Marketing: A Necessary Evil
Hello fellow authors and writers,
It’s been a while since I did a random post on here, and I wanted to touch on something that I’ve been coming to terms with lately.
As you can tell by the title of this post, this post is all about marketing.
Okay, okay, I know what you’re thinking.
Yes, marketing is a word which most authors loathe. But it’s a word we must all become acquainted with quite well if we want to be successful.
Authors are given tons of pointers on a daily basis. Write every day, show not tell, blah dee freaking blah. But marketing is also really important, maybe one of the most important pointers to take to heart.
I myself have let my marketing fall by the wayside, and it wasn’t until I spoke with my good friend Randall Krzak that I really began to understand just what kind of box I was putting myself in.
You see, marketing helps get the word out about your work. It’s hard enough being an indie author, and even harder if you’re self published. Even if you have large social media bases with thousands of followers, odds are you are still struggling to make a buck.
For me, this is essentially starting over, and I’ve been doing some research to formulate a marketing strategy not only for my Reaper sequel release (date TBA), but also for the foreseeable future.
In the coming weeks (or most likely months), I’ll be taking a look at different kinds of marketing options, both free and nonfree. I will say, many effective strategies do actually cost money, but I figured this would be a great opportunity to share information with other authors and writers wondering what possibilities are out there.
So for today, just answer me this. Are you happy with your current marketing strategy? Do you have one?
You already know the answer with me, that’s why I’m posting. But I’d love to hear what you have to say! Is marketing something you would be interested in learning more about?
Let me know in the comments, and have a great day!

Since I haven’t sold anything, I can’t answer with authority, but I’d think that target audiences would make sense. Doesn’t FB target ads? How about listing at Horror Writers Association (if you’re a member)?
Oh yes, totally! Knowing your target audience is extremely important in this profession. Gotta gear promotions towards them.
FB does target ads like that, though I haven’t done too many ads on there.
Hmm I didn’t think about Horror Writers Association. Good idea!
