Movie Review – The Darkness (Netflix)
Movie Blurb:
A family unknowingly awakens an ancient supernatural entity on a Grand Canyon vacation, and must fight for survival when it follows them home.
My Review:
Characters
Entertaining characters with strengths, weaknesses, and enough depth to keep the watcher rooting for them the whole time.
Plot
A creepy, haunting story centered around the mysterious disappearance of the Anasazi tribe.
Flow
Though some small developments go unfulfilled, overall this film flowed quite nicely.
Overall Impression
You know I love my horror movies, so when I saw this on Netflix I freaked, mainly because Radha Mitchell is in it (famous for her character from Silent Hill).
The blurb pretty much explains it, but this film is about a family being haunted by spirits after visiting the Grand Canyon.
I really liked this movie.
The characters didn’t really blow me away, but I loved Radha Mitchell. She is always great a playing a mom character. The other characters were decent also. I’d have to say my least favorite was Kevin Bacon, mainly due to his character’s personality. There was also nods to autism and bullemia in here that I enjoyed.
The plot had me from the very start. Vacation time? Bringing haunted stuff back with you? Creepy happenings? I’m all for it! The plot was simple, but I think that’s why I enjoyed this as much as I did (so many people trashed this on IMDB). Again, it didn’t shake me to the core, but it was entertaining and my eyes were glued to the screen.
All in all, this was a solid horror movie that was entertaining despite public opinion. Give it a shot if you have some time!
Special note: I got a little creeped out while watching this because at the time I was reading a book (Animorphs #34) and there was a joke about the Anasazi tribe in the book right around the time I started watching this. So coincidentally weird!
Final Score
6.5/10

Oh, I like the sound of this one. Cool movie art, too, with all the hand prints.
Yeah, the concept was really great, and I like how they tied it to a real historical tribe of Indians.
I haven’t watched it. I haven’t really been watching much of anything besides YouTube. I loved Kevin Bacon in Tremors and Footloose and now that you made me think of them I want to rewatch them lol.
Yeah I have been binging a little too much on Netflix lately. But I agree, Kevin Bacon is really good. I wonder how that new scary movie he’s in is. Hmmm
I’m pretty sure the 2 movies I mentioned are the only movies I’ve watched with him in it.
Aww no! We must have more Bacon in our lives
I watched the trailer for his new movie a while ago and I can’t for the life of me remember the name of it lol but I remember I thought it sounded good.
Yeah I forget too. It had mixed reviews so I’m waiting for it to go on sale for rental
Don’t blame you!!
Oooh, I get creeped out by those weird coincidences too. A few months ago, it seemed like Lord Byron kept popping up EVERYWHERE in my entertainment life. That was a very very odd few weeks.
Yeah, it was so weird! They never mentioned the Anasazi in the series until this one, which just felt very odd and kinda gave me chills. Like “what is happening here?” Luckily I was not visited by evil Anasazi demons. Thank goodness!
Definitely have to check this out! I didn’t know this was on Netflix.
Oh me either. I stumbled upon it by accident and was like “Is that my Radha? Ieeee!”
I think you’ll like it.
Great review… Gonna watch it! 💜
Thanks! It’s worth a try for sure. Very spooky
